July 4th Suddenly Has a Whole New Meaning

249 years ago today, the Continental Congress with delegates from all of the 13 American colonies signed one of the most significant documents in the history of the world. The Declaration of Independence said, in no uncertain terms, that the settlers refused to continue serving King George of Great Britain and that they would set up something new – a government governed of, by and for the people (at the time, this meant a relatively small percentage of the people, though that number has expanded greatly over time).

They drafted and sent this document to the King with the full understanding that it would lead to a long, painful and costly war, a war that had in fact already begun but was about to get a whole lot worse.

Ultimately, they were successful and they created a government that has been been a shining example for virtually every democracy across the world that has sprung up since. Our system of government has faced many challenges over the next 25 decades, and it has often swayed far from its mission, but it has always held together and has defeated every challenge.

Until now.

On July 3rd, 2025, and for several days prior, we saw virtually every Senator and Congressman from the political party in power fully prostrate themselves before the man they consider their sworn king and then pass vital legislation simply because it benefits his own personal desires for power and vengeance while greatly harming the rights, freedoms, protections, income, health and needs of the people who elected them and who they had each taken a sacred oath to serve.

And today these same people expect us to celebrate the birth of our wonderful democracy and those who brought it forth.

I, for one, am not willing to celebrate the birth of the world’s greatest democracy by bowing down to a king. We are better people than that. We are a far better country than those who wish to rule us with an iron fist, who send anonymous thugs to round up innocent civilians and send them off to be tortured and those who are eager to send our own military to our own cities to wage battle against our own citizens because they disagree with their sadistic monarch.

This year, July 4th should not be celebrated as before. We need to treat July 4th the same way that these brave Americans did 249 years ago – by rising up against a ruthless dictator and his sycophantic minions. Many gave their lives to bring this glorious new experiment called democracy into being, and we must not be the ones to let the flames of freedom die out on our watch.

The original patriots were the ones who formed the revolution against a powerful tyrant who wanted to rule them and force their obedience. Future generations will honor those of us who stood up against these cruel authoritarians as the true patriots of the early 21st century.

If you are not already a part of the resistance, now is the time to join. Speak up. Loudly and often. Get in the streets. Become active in the groups that are working to defeat these monsters. Write letters to the editor. Create activist art and write activist songs. Demand that your leaders fight for democracy with every fiber of their being as you fight for democracy with every fiber of your own being.

The second American Revolution has now begun and our country needs you to be a part of it.
