Heavy Reflections on the 4th [1]

Feels Bad, Fam. That’s really all I got left today after this last week of awful news. It’s bad enough at the national level, watching the One Grotesque Ridiculous Bill sail through over the spineless Rs. It was a masterclass in capitulation and buck-passing that will echo down through the years. Meanwhile, here in Florida, we watched the Everglades Gulag get built. And at the state level, the asshats in the legislature passed a bill (Florida Senate Bill 180) that preempts local jurisdictions and counties from adopting building, development, or planning regulations the development and real estate industry deems more “restrictive or burdensome” until October of 2027. Put simply, if we see a problem at the local level as a result of a storm (say an area that floods consistently and shouldn’t have more houses built on it), we’re not able to increase regulations to stop bad building and they’ll probably be in harms way during the next storm. Basically, regulatory agencies are now nothing but a fig leaf in this state for the will of the land exploitation industries.

It’s been a raft of disheartening news and defeat after defeat here and around the nation. I’m not feeling patriotic at all today. I’m hoping this is our nadir — our Valley Forge or Fredericksburg moment — but with so long to go before midterms and the apparent complete capitulation of the legislative and judicial branches to the executive, I fear for the future of this country and my kids. We shouldn’t give up, but we need to start moving the needle the other direction soon.
