Bringing Home Don Bacon
Itās not even July 4, and two Republicans in swing seats have already declared their independence. āļø Once Donald Trump solidified his hold on the Republican party, obedience became the price of membership. Independent thought is forbidden in a party devoted to the whims of one man and the demands of his core supporters. Tragically, far too many Republican officials have been willing to hand over their agency. For those who have not, or at least have qualms, serving in government has to be a constant balancing act with their conscience. I say this without much sympathy, because Republicans could have fought this years ago. They could band together and fight it now. Or they could run away, which is what Bacon and Tillis have decided to do. āļø Back in April, I wrote about five factors that need to be in place to propel a blue wave election next year. Three of them were already thereāand still are: voter anger, Democratic over-performance in special elections, and excellent candidate recruitment. Item #4 on this listāretirements from the other partyāis an indicator that typically doesnāt come into focus until much later in the cycle: āļø I thought we would have to wait at least until Christmas before getting a measure of how badly Republicans wanted to run for the exits. Bacon and Tillis would have been high on my list of members who might have ultimately decided to return home, but I never imagined they would head out before we reached July. Yet here we are, with two high-profile, politically meaningful dropouts hanging it up in advance of the final vote on Donald Trumpās poisonous domestic wish list. If you want another sign that 2026 is looking like a blue year, this is it.

Marc Elias and Democracy Docket are still sounding the alarm about Rs trying to suppress the vote. One of the most important tasks ahead of us is passing a votersā rights bill, but that wonāt happen until democrats control congress and the White House. How pathetic are republicans that their priority is to see as few voters as possible?
Anti-Voting Activists Definitely Havenāt Given Up on Passing the SAVE Act
Since the U.S. House passed the SAVE Act back in April, the GOPās monster voter suppression bill has fallen out of the headlines somewhat. The measure ā which would require people registering to vote to show documentary proof of citizenship, potentially disenfranchising millions of Americans ā represents the worst attack on voting rights in American history, historians told Democracy Docket. But it appears doomed in the Senate, where it lacks the votes to overcome an all-but-certain Democratic filibuster. Still, donāt breathe easy just yet ā because some of the most influential right-wing activists certainly havenāt given up on the SAVE Act. In fact, theyāre ramping up a major campaign this summer to pressure lawmakers into getting around the filibuster and forcing the measure onto President Donald Trumpās desk. In an organizing meeting held Monday on Zoom and listened to by Democracy Docket, Tea Party Patriots co-founder Jenny Beth Martin explained the strategy: Use grassroots pressure to convince lawmakers to attach the SAVE Act to must-pass legislation later this year ā probably either a continuing resolution spending bill or the defense funding bill, known as the National Defense Reauthorization Act ā which might be hard for Democrats to sustain a filibuster on. āWeāve learned over the course of our movement that when you want to get something done, you have to attach it to must-pass legislation,ā Martin explained. āļø
I do not have a passport, and I changed my name when I got married. Iād be flagged with the SAVE act and could not vote. There are millions of us being targeted by this horrible legislation.
There are 2 other stories at the link outlining more shenanigans in the works to reduce voter rolls and to enforce the felonās anti-voting executive order. These people never stop, which is why Iām relieved we have competent fighters on our team. I do worry about these issues making it to the extreme court.
===
Addressing that extreme court worry, this is such a good article. Iāll place the flutter here, but I encourage you to click and read more.
Any of you familiar with my diaries know how much I respect Heather Cox Richardson. She is the best for filling in the blanks with historical context. I know itās a long video (nearly 40 minutes) but it is a great explainer for how weāve gotten to this point where Rs are rabidly anti-immigrant. Of course, it makes no sense at all, and it hurts our country in the worst ways, but Rs donāt think straight.
===
Iām wondering about that horrible extreme court decision and this sheds only a bit of light. Maybe the lower courts will still uphold the rule of law regardless of the shit coming from the extreme 6.

No passage yet.
x Four R nay votes. Thatās ballgame. Rule fails
[image or embed] ā Kristin Wilson š (@kristin-wilson.bsky.social) July 2, 2025 at 9:50 PM I wish that was it and the ugly bill was history, but theyāll keep at it. Keep calling and emailing. We havenāt lost yet! (As of this morning!!! Iāll keep checking in today and hoping for the best!) === Updates from todayās news⦠I love our Dems!!! Hakeem Jeffries was on hour 5 of holding the floor to delay the vote as of this writing. Iām watching a bit of it live and he is doing great!!! x House GOP tried to gut Medicaid & SNAP in the dead of nightābut House Dems refused to back down. Leader Jeffries turned the āMagic Minuteā into hours of powerful testimony, lifting up the voices of those whose lives are on the line. On the eve of July 4th, thereās nothing more American than that.
[image or embed] ā Rep. Johnny Olszewski (@repjohnnyo.bsky.social) July 3, 2025 at 9:03 AM === I love Scott Dworkin. Great News, Unless Youāre Trump āļø Last week in Carlinville, IL, some bad actors parked a dumpster and a truckāboth full of manureāoutside the regular anti-Trump protest spot. In response, around five times as many people showed up to this weekās protest. Thatās what I call backlash. Nearly all of the members of the City Commission in Key West, FL, voted to cancel the agreement between the cityās police and ICE. This would mean that the Key West Police Department will no longer hold detainees for ICE, or share arrest data with them. DeSantis threatened retaliation, but they arenāt backing down. DeSantis has other things to worry about right now anyway, as his abomination of a detention center known as āAlligator Alcatrazā flooded, due to a regular rainstorm. The good news is that this new evidence can be added to the lawsuit aimed at shutting the facility down. Itās a colossal disaster in the making, from all anglesāone that DeSantis, Trump, and Noem all deserve the blame for. āļø === Whew. This day has been trying. Iām refreshing as I can to find breaking news. Apologies if something happens that I didnāt post. Regardless, we will deal with what comes together. We will fight and save our democracy. We have to. === Ugh. It passed. This isnāt over. We are going to sweep them out of office in massive numbers. ===

The history of beans as a food source dates back about six thousand years when beans were first cultivated by ancient human civilizations. This makes beans one of the oldest cultivated plants. The Egyptians seem to have a special interest in beans where they were left as the food for the departed and their souls in the afterlife. When the first colonists arrived at the New World, Native Americans taught them to grow beans with corn so the bean plants can climb the cornstalks. Although there are about 4,000 varieties of beans in the world, only a fraction of these are used for human consumption. Beans are a very good source of fibers, protein, vitamins, complex carbohydrates, folate, and iron but some of them, like red and white kidney beans, also have toxins while they are raw. === ===
National CROWN Day is a day of solidarity for the human rights of Black women, men, and children to wear their natural hair boldly, and proudly, without the fear of being discriminated against in school or the workplace. Also known as the "Black Hair Independence Day," this unofficial holiday celebrates Afro-textured hair - or the tight curls, coils and kinks most often associated with Black and indigenous people of color. Created by The Crown Coalition, National Crown Day is campaigning to end hair discrimination in the workplace and at schools, which the Black community face far too often when wearing their natural hair. The CROWN Act, which stands for āCreate a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair,ā is a law that prohibits race-based hair discrimination, which is the denial of employment and educational opportunities because of hair texture or protective hairstyles including braids, locks, twists or bantu knots.

The sun provides us with vital Vitamin D and offers warmth and light, but overexposure to its ultraviolet (UV) rays can have serious consequences. Prolonged exposure to the sun can lead to various short-term and long-term health issues, including sunburn, premature aging, eye damage, and an increased risk of skin cancer. National Stay Out of the Sun Day is a reminder to strike a balance between enjoying outdoor activities and safeguarding our skin from the harmful effects of the sun. It encourages us to adopt healthy habits that minimize the risks associated with excessive sun exposure.
