Trump to strip protections from millions of acres of national forests

google The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is ending the 2001 Roadless Rule, which protected 58.5 million acres of national forest land from logging and road construction.

The USDA announced this decision, stating the rule was outdated and hindered responsible forest management, including wildfire prevention and timber production, according to the USDA. This action will allow road building and timber harvesting in previously protected areas.

Key Points:

The Roadless Rule:

This rule, established in 2001, prohibited road construction and logging in inventoried roadless areas within national forests.

USDA's Rationale:

The USDA argues the rule was overly restrictive, preventing responsible forest management practices like timber harvesting and road building for wildfire response, according to the USDA.

Impact:

The rescission opens up approximately 58.5 million acres of national forest land to logging and road construction.

Concerns:

Environmental groups and some experts express concern that the decision will harm ecosystems, increase wildfire risk, and negatively impact watersheds.

Deciduous forests flourish in the Appalachian Highlands.
