Alligator Alcatraz: A Hurricane Disaster Waiting to Happen [1]

Florida’s massive tent-based detention facility in the Everglades—nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz”—is drawing intense criticism from environmentalists, human rights advocates, and emergency planners. With space for 5,000 detainees and constructed largely from tents and trailers, the facility sits in one of the most hurricane-prone regions in the country.

Since 2000, at least eight major hurricanes and numerous tropical storms have swept through or near the Everglades:

2004 : Charley, Frances, Jeanne

2005 : Katrina, Wilma

2016 : Hermine

2017 : Irma

2022 : Ian, Nicole

2024: Milton (Cat 3), Helene (under review)

Storms like Irma (2017) and Ian (2022) carved paths directly through South Florida, leaving behind billions in damage and highlighting the risks of placing vulnerable populations in flood-prone, low-lying wetlands.

Critics warn that housing thousands of people in temporary structures without hardened hurricane protections is a recipe for tragedy. Evacuation logistics for such a large population are daunting, especially in an area with limited access roads and surrounded by sensitive ecosystems.

As hurricane seasons grow longer and storms become more intense due to climate change, building a tent city in the Everglades is not just reckless—it’s a disaster waiting to happen.
