10 Gems of Bluesky Today - Day 26 - Aussie Critter Special [1]

Greetings mate! Today’s edition is a little different. I’ve devoted half the entries to the well-known murderous Australian wildlife. I did leave out the fearsome Australian drop-bear, because nobody wants to see one of those up close, and no actual photos exist (as they always also eat the cameras of their victims). So lets get started...

This guy must have watched my wife trying to evict a huntsman* spider

*For reference, this is a huntsman (not counted as a gem in the tally):

x 🕷️ In Australia, a man decided to let a giant huntsman spider live in his home. Despite their large size and hairy appearance, huntsman spiders aren’t considered dangerous. — Zandra.Bluesky 420buddy (@zandra-b.bsky.social) 2025-05-17T14:20:05.567Z

They are harmless. I usually just pick them up and put them outside. I did try to convince my wife that they are great for pest control and don’t really bother anyone. My wife feels differently for some weird reason. Then again, she IS a California girl.

I also often hear Americans saying that in Australia every animal wants to kill you. So I give you the murderous Bilby!! You have been warned! Cadbury actually make chocolate Bilbies for Easter. True story.

On the other hand, beware this critter that many tourists think are cute - they can and will maul you if provoked.

x #kangaroo #amazingday #muscles #redroo #roo #poser On one hand I am jealous of that bod! But on the other hand I‘m scared of the workouts I‘d have to do to get there .. 😆 Lone Pone Koala Sanctuary #auswildlife #australia #sanctuary #lonepinekoalasanctuary — Giographic Adventures (@giographic-photos.bsky.social) 2025-03-18T07:18:07.588Z

We also still have actual dinosaurs in the wild. This is the Jurassic Park version though. The normal ones look like a haystack on legs, with a menacing evil head and serial-killer eyes sticking out at the top (see title photo). It was pretty cool to see one without feathers though. You can see the little T-Rex arms. I will bet money that one day scientists will discover that T-Rex actually had feathers. Lots of movies would have to be remade...

x Someone posted these emu on tumblr, they apparently have a genetic mutation and weren’t purposefully bred for this, but are living their best lives. And I find it fascinating to see, it’s also interesting to see their baby patterns still apparent on their body. — Hazard (@datgreenmonstah.bsky.social) 2025-07-01T17:09:31.568Z

Enough about Australia, let's talk about another animal that's gotten bad PR. I thought this article was cool enough to counts as a gem. And for the record, we have these critters too...

And with that out of the way, back to the funnies..

We're all the same on the inside. QED:

Makes me want to buy carrots and bananas

Timeline cleanser! Does anyone need a hug?

I hope you enjoyed this “Aussie Special” and that I made you smile. As always, wishing you a good morning, g’day, or good night, wherever you are on this round rock we all call home.
