Yesterday was Asteroid Day, a U.N. designated day to increase public awareness of the risks of asteroid impacts.
Asteroid Day is held on June 30, the anniversary of the Tunguska event in 1908 when a meteor air burst leveled about 2,150 sq km of forest in Siberia.
The stony asteroid about 50–60 m in size exploded at an altitude of 5 to 10 km. Estimates of its energy range from 3–30 megatons of TNT.
How much damage can an asteroid cause on Earth? Objects smaller than 25m harmlessly burn up in the atmosphere. The Tunguska event (Jun 30, 1908) was caused by a 50-60 m asteroid. The airburst at 6–10 km altitude flattened ~80 million trees over a 2,150 sq km area. Every ~2K years, a football field sized object causes significant damage. Every few million years, we get an object like the 10 km asteroid 65 mil years ago that wiped out 3/4 of all species and most dinosaurs. Now let’s focus on today’s puzzle composed in 1940 by Dutch composer and International Master Gerardus Hendrikus Drese (1902 - 1980). P.S.
