Homeland Security head and puppy killer Kristi Noem using prisoners in El Salvador for a photo op.
The cruelty is the point.
The Great Replacement obsession of the MAGA movement is going above and beyond simply deporting people back to their countries of origin. Sending them straight to a prison without due process is now S.O.P. They can even be U.S. citizens and still get deported. (Homeland Security insists that’s not happening and the media is lying.)
Besides, citizenship is now optional — it’s possible to have done everything necessary to become a citizen, and still have it stripped away. It’s all about numbers — Stephen Miller wants 3,000 deportations a day.
You can be arrested just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time and looking too brown. You can be in a courthouse complying with the law, and still be hauled away. Heck — you can be from Norway and be denied entry to the U.S. just for having the wrong picture on your phone. You can be a U.S. Senator and be wrestled to the ground and handcuffed just for trying to ask Kristi Noem a question. You can be someone who risked their life helping the U.S. in Afghanistan, and still be deported.
But if you’re some white dude from South Africa, welcome to America.
Trump is all excited about Alligator Alcatraz, a detention center built in the Everglades.
President Donald Trump on Tuesday visited the official opening of an immigration detention camp in Florida’s Everglades that is surrounded by alligators dubbed "Alligator Alcatraz" and said officials there would prioritize deporting the "worst of the worst" first. The 3,000-bed facility is set to become the largest migrant detention center in the U.S., built as part of the Trump administration’s effort to deport the millions who flooded the country under the Biden administration. Florida National Guard members will be deputized as immigration judges, allowing migrants to have hearings within 48 hours, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said, while Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem warned illegal migrants to self-deport or else risk ending up at the facility.
The “millions who flooded the country under the Biden administration” is an administration lie of course.
And if that’s not enough, people can get shipped to a country they’ve never been to before, where they will be at risk. It’s part of an effort to create a U.S. system for deporting people to prisons around the world, without due process. What happens to them there will be out of sight, out of mind — except for those in the Administration slavering over the prospect. Charlie Pierce picked up on the story.
Is it possible for a nation of Reichstags to develop a world full of gulags, or does that stretch historical analogies beyond the breaking point? Let’s let the Intercept settle this question. An Intercept investigation finds that the Trump administration has been hard at work trying to expand its global gulag for expelled immigrants, exploring deals with a quarter of the world’s nations to accept so-called third-country nationals—deported persons who are not their citizens. To create this archipelago of injustice, the U.S. government is employing strong-arm tactics with dozens of smaller, weaker, and economically dependent nations. The deals are being conducted in secret, and neither the State Department nor U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement will discuss them. With the green light from the Supreme Court, thousands of immigrants are in danger of being disappeared into this network of deportee dumping grounds. I’m old enough to remember the spirit that animated things like the Peace Corps and the Alliance for Progress. Yes, there was in that spirit a dollop of paternalism edging toward a soft colonialism. But along the way, people got roads and bridges, schools, and safe water systems. Now we’re offering them money so they’ll help us outsource our crimes against humanity. And who is the primary pitchman for this inhumanity? Marco Rubio, the Incredible Shrinking Politician, lost now forever in the president’s pocket, next to the crumbled Adderall.
Countries are being strong-armed into this under the threat of a travel ban if they don’t cooperate.
The Intercept—using open-source information—found that the U.S. has also explored, sought, or struck agreements with Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Benin, Bhutan, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Cambodia, Cameroon, Costa Rica, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Dominica, Egypt, Eswatini, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Ivory Coast, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Liberia, Libya, Malawi, Mauritania, Mexico, Moldova, Mongolia, Niger, Nigeria, Panama, Rwanda, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, São Tomé and Príncipe, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, South Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Tonga, Tuvalu, Uganda, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vanuatu, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
The Trump regime is criming so fast in so many ways in so many different directions, it’s impossible to keep up. As bad as the ICE kidnappings are, they are only the most visible part of a system of deliberate atrocities. This is not something America can afford to sweep under the rug. Remember the right wing conspiracy theories about Obama’s FEMA prison camps? Leave it to the right wing to make it happen.
