Bacon and Carolina BBQ: Breaking Down Two Key Republican Retirements (Larry Sabato) It may not have been exactly the case that Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) and Rep. Don Bacon (R, NE-2) were, respectively, the most vulnerable Republican Senate and House incumbents next year. One could make the case for others in each chamber, but they each would have had to have been high on the list. Whether either could have hung on next year is a question we won’t be able to answer, though, as both announced their retirements over the past couple of days. We already had the North Carolina Senate race as a Toss-up, and we are maintaining that rating. We had NE-2 as a Toss-up, and we’re moving it to Leans Democratic as an open seat. Since that’s where we’re making a change, let’s start with NE-2 and then assess the Senate race in the Tar Heel State. centerforpolitics.org/...

Texas Democrat Colin Allred launches 2026 U.S. Senate campaign Democrat Colin Allred launched his campaign for U.S. Senate on Tuesday, making a second run at the upper chamber after failing to unseat U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz last year. “Texans are working harder than ever, not getting as much time with their kids, missing those special moments, all to be able to afford less,” Allred, a former Dallas congressman who gave up his seat to run against Cruz, said in his announcement video. “And the people that we elected to help — politicians like John Cornyn and Ken Paxton — are too corrupt to care about us and too weak to fight for us.” www.texastribune.org/...

Roy Cooper leans toward N.C. Senate bid, potential Trump showdown North Carolina Democrats are getting closer to the gift they've have been asking for all year, with former Gov. Roy Cooper (D) leaning toward a Senate run in the state President Trump has won three times. Why it matters: The field is essentially frozen until Cooper and Lara Trump, the president's daughter-in-law, decide if they want to be their party's nominees. www.axios.com/...

Dems grapple with where Mamdani fits in party’s rebuild Democrats are grappling with how progressive upstart Zohran Mamdani fits into the party apparatus, a week after his shock defeat of former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and amid the party’s soul-searching since a devastating loss in the 2024 presidential election. As the New York City mayoral primary results are finalized on Tuesday, few party leaders have officially endorsed Mamdani, with the exception of Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.), who represents parts of Manhattan with large Jewish populations. Adding to the tension are Mamdani’s recent justifications of the phrase “globalize the intifada” along with a history of involvement in anti-Israel groups such as Boycott, Divest and Sanction (BDS), a movement to isolate Israel from the rest of the world for violations of international law. thehill.com/...

Cornyn gets a big fundraising boost in Texas Senate primary against Paxton John Cornyn is not going down without a fight. After months of polls showing the four-term Texas senator trailing in the Republican primary, a pro-Cornyn super PAC raised almost $11 million in the most recent fundraising period. Texans for a Conservative Majority, the outside group supporting Cornyn in his primary challenge from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, will have over $12 million cash on hand after the current fundraising quarter. The group has raised over $10.9 million in the quarter after Paxton announced his primary challenge against Cornyn. www.politico.com/...

Can ‘Ohio’s Anthony Fauci’ Beat Vivek Ramaswamy? ARCHBOLD, Ohio — On a Thursday night in early April, outside the banquet hall of a community college off a rural stretch of highway in northwest Ohio, a small group was hovering excitedly around Amy Acton. Acton, Ohio’s Covid-era health director, was headlining a Democratic fundraiser an hour outside Toledo as the party’s first announced 2026 gubernatorial candidate. Beside a table of wilted iceberg lettuce bowls, Acton greeted a gaggle of mostly female supporters. A woman in her 80s, a former Republican, gushed that Acton had been “marvelous” as pandemic health director. A woman in her 50s, an employee of a local health department, asked Acton to sign a printout of the “Swiss Cheese Model,” a visual aid that became a hallmark of Ohio’s Covid briefings. A nurse in her 30s showed Acton her Covid scrapbook. “I feel like I didn’t get this part [as health director],” Acton, now five years out from that job, told the nurse, “getting to meet people and hear their stories.” www.politico.com/...

Ways and Means member Evans says he will not seek reelection Pennsylvania Democrat Dwight Evans, who sits on the powerful Ways and Means Committee and had been dogged by health issues, announced on Monday that he would not seek reelection. “Serving the people of Philadelphia has been the honor of my life,” Evans said in a statement Monday. “And I remain in good health and fully capable of continuing to serve. After some discussions this weekend and thoughtful reflection, I have decided that the time is right to announce that I will not be seeking re-election in 2026.” rollcall.com/...

Former Connolly chief of staff wins Democratic nod in Virginia special election James Walkinshaw, a former top aide to the late Virginia Rep. Gerald E. Connolly, won the Democratic nomination Saturday in the special election to succeed his former boss, putting him on track to become the next member of Congress from the deep-blue district. Walkinshaw, a Fairfax County supervisor, defeated nine other candidates in a party-run “firehouse primary,” according to Democratic officials in Virginia’s 11th District. He won 60 percent of the vote, while his nearest rivals, state Del. Irene Shin and state Sen. Stella Pekarsky, trailed with 14 percent and 13 percent, respectively. rollcall.com/...

Republican field for 2026 Maine governor’s race slow to take shape Republican state Rep. Laurel Libby, who is one of the most prominent hardliners in the Maine legislature, tells the Portland Press Herald's Rachel Ohm that she's"actively exploring a run for governor." Libby added that she's in no hurry to decide whether she'll run to replace Democratic Gov. Janet Mills, who is termed out. Libby attracted widespread attention in February after her colleagues censured her for publicizing the name and photo of a high school athlete she identified as transgender on social media. That punishment, which passed along party lines in the Democratic-led lower chamber, prohibited her from speaking on the House floor or voting in the chamber unless she apologized. www.the-downballot.com/...

In Auburn, regional GOP leaders urge 'battle-tested' Lawler to run for NY governor When U.S. Rep. Michael Lawler visited Auburn one week ago, he heard from central New York Republican and Conservative leaders who want him to run for governor in 2026. Lawler, a Hudson Valley Republican who is exploring a bid to challenge Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul, headlined the event held on June 22 at A.T. Walley and Co. Cayuga County Republican Chairman Nate VeVone hosted the private discussion, which was attended by state and county GOP committee leaders. Conservative Party leaders, including Cayuga County Conservative Party Chairman Dave Pappert, were also present. auburnpub.com/...

Kevin Techau ends campaign for Iowa-2 I’ve dedicated my life to public service – as an officer in the U.S. Air Force, Iowa Air National Guard, Commissioner of the Iowa Department of Public Safety, and U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa. When I started this campaign for Congress, I did so with that same deep belief in public service and a commitment to the people of Iowa. I adamantly believe Iowa’s Second Congressional District deserves better leadership than what we’re getting from Ashley Hinson. Iowans deserve leaders rooted in decency, facts, and the rule of law. It is regrettable that too much of our politics is about money. And I still hold out hope that with greater civic engagement, democracy rather than dollars, will ultimately prevail. But campaigns aren’t just about convictions — they require resources to be competitive. And the reality is, this campaign’s fundraising simply hasn’t met the threshold level that this race demands. As such, I am announcing effective today, that I am suspending my campaign for Congress. mailchi.mp/...

Could Brad Lander primary Dan Goldman in NY-10? City Comptroller Brad Lander didn’t get the results he hoped for in the 2025 mayoral primary, but he may set his sights on New York’s 10th Congressional District. The district is currently represented by former lead counsel in President Trump’s first impeachment and Levi Strauss heir Dan Goldman. While on The Brian Lehrer Show Monday morning, a caller asked Lander about his political future and suggested a congressional campaign in the lower Manhattan and brownstone Brooklyn district. Many consider Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani’s stunning primary win a referendum on the Democratic Party, paving the way for progressives to challenge established party leaders such as Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer and Goldman, who has represented the district since 2023. www.cityandstateny.com/...

Zohran Mamdani’s Asian American coalition On a baking stretch of concrete in Jackson Heights’ Diversity Plaza three days before the election, Zohran Mamdani’s earliest endorsers huddled around the ascendant Democratic mayoral candidate for one final rally. Supporters held up signs that read “Freeze the Rent” and “Cuomo hearts Trump” in Chinese, as well as others in Bangla, Nepalese and Spanish. The crowd of around 100 people included supporters and members – young and old – of those early endorsers: Desis Rising Up & Moving (DRUM Beats), CAAAV Voice, the political arm of the tenant union that works in working-class Asian American communities, and New York Communities for Change. www.cityandstateny.com/...
