Burros of Oatman Arizona + Scorpion Season. [1]

Late last week my daughter was traveling to Las Vegas for a karate tournament. Along the way she and her boyfriend took a break from driving at a small town called Oatman. While approaching Oatman they stopped as few burros ambled across the road.

Always brake for wildlife.

Their planned brief stop for lunch became an adventure of sorts. My daughter sent me these photos, along with the comment that she's pretty sure there's more burros living in Oatman than there are people. According to Visitarizona.com, she's right about that.

According to the Oatman Chamber of Commerce website, about a dozen or so wild burros can be seen in Oatman on any day, while very many more herds of them live in the hills outside of town.

There were a few babies roaming around with their moms.

The story goes, these burros are the direct descendants of those which were brought in by gold miners around 1900. When the miners eventually left the burros stayed behind and became an integral part of the town itself.

Those ears! That face!

The locals seem to appreciate their wild ass neighbors, images of them appear all over the place.

The town of Oatman is located at the far northwest corner of Arizona on Historic Route 66, in Mojave County.

This one was especially friendly according to my daughter.

I'd like to visit Oatman sometime and meet a few of those wild ass residents myself.

The burros arrived in Oatman around the same time as the post office and the first hotel, shown here.

Hot weather is here and it's time for my annual blurb regarding scorpion season.1) Keep a jar of meat tenderizer on hand. Generic is OK. If you'll never cook with it keep it in your medicine cabinet. To treat a scorpion sting add a couple drops of water to about half a teaspoon make a paste. Apply to the sting and cover with a bandage to hold it in place. This helps to neutralize the venom and reduce pain. 2) get a small UV blacklight flashlight to locate scorpions in the dark. Scorpions light up like the 4th of July under UV light. Everyone in my house has one of these in their bedroom. Scorpion stings hurt SO. MUCH. This stuff can help.

I'm told that meat tenderizer also works on wasp.and bee stings.
