Trump's Mental, Physical Decline is Obvious and Getting More So [1]

There was yet another story about Trump going nuts this morning, and the headline was blunt and brutal: 'Brain is peanut butter': Trump mocked for calling Japanese leader 'Mr. Japan'

President Donald Trump was brutally mocked over the weekend after he referred to Japan's leader as "Mr. Japan." The president made the statement during an interview with Fox News host Maria Bartiromo about tariffs. As his July 9 deadline for tariff deals approached, Trump said he would rather send a letter to countries instead of negotiating. . . . "We'll send a letter and we'll say we would consider it a great honor, and this is what you'll have to do to shop in the United States," he opined. "We're like a department store to shop in the United States, and you'll pay a 25% tariff, or we wish you a lot of luck, and that's the end of the trade deal." "I could send one to Japan. Dear Mr. Japan, here's the story. You're going to pay a 25% tariff on your cars."

Dear. Mister. Japan.

This latest brainfart moved me to see how many stories have surfaced just in the past month about Trump’s increasing (and increasingly obvious) mental decline. U.S. mainstream media is still playing dumb, but overseas and locally attention is being paid.

Start with Lawrence O’Donnell (kind of mainstream, sort of) 10 days ago: MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell Calls Out Trump’s ‘Mental Decline’: ‘It’s From Low to Lower’

New Republic, 4 days ago: Cognitive Decline? Trump Rambles About Paper Clip During Speech

PennLive, yesterday: Donald Trump relative sounds alarm on president’s decline: ‘He looks terrible’

and PennLive today: Donald Trump hit with disturbing cognitive claims: ‘Weekend at Bernie’s White House’

[Dr. John Gartner, “an acclaimed psychologist and former Johns Hopkins professor warned”:] “Basically, what we see are the classic signs of dementia, which is gross deterioration from someone’s baseline and function,” he said. “That’s very important because one of the areas that we can most physically see this is in his verbal productions. And, if you go back and look at film from the 1980s, he actually was extremely articulate. He was still a jerk, but he was able to express himself in polished paragraphs, and now he really has trouble completing a thought and that is a huge deterioration. . . .”

And that is when Trump went and created a social media stir. “You look right up there,” he said pointing at the wall where the Declaration of Indepence [sic] is displayed. “I don’t know. You see the Declaration of Independence, and I say, I wonder if you know the Civil War always seemed to me maybe that could have been solved without losing 600,000 plus people.”

Responding to this an other recent gaffes, an expert commented:

“His lack of focus makes it seem as though he’s experiencing cognitive decline, that his brain is not well-disciplined, and he’s unable to maintain a thought and carry it through a logical conclusion,” Dr. Jennifer R. Mercieca, a professor of Communication and Journalism at Texas A&M University, said.

Finally, allchronology.com: “A Guy Named Me”: Experts Warn Trump’s Mental Collapse Is Accelerating — And America Is in Denial:

That’s the growing consensus from mental health experts, former administration officials, and millions of viewers watching Donald Trump struggle through rally speeches and depositions filled with gibberish, slurred speech, and bizarre name mashups like “Nikki Pelosi.” Now, in a sobering report shared by over 500 licensed medical professionals, the warning is no longer subtle: Donald Trump is displaying unmistakable signs of dementia — and it’s accelerating.

These signs include:

verbal decline

memory confusion

disorientation and tangential thinking

motor and behavioral decline

(The story is dated 27 June 2025, but speaks of Trump as the presumptive nominee, so even though it doesn’t say so, it could be a repost from last year — which would make it all the more damning.)

There is a common tendency to downplay or dismiss individual events as one-off’s or nasty reporting, so every now and then we should make a collected list like this one. A truly frightening list, the more so since the people who have the authority to do something about — and who certainly are more aware of this than we are, given how close they are to Trump — will not do anything.
