Is this It? The end of a functioning Democracy in this country? [1]

The men that created our democratic form of government had a couple of goals in mind. No taxation without representation. Well, for middle- and upper-class whites, anyway. And a governing body with checks and balances to prevent anyone from doing a King George on them, by usurping complete control over the populace.
Since Trump was inaugurated, much attention has focused on what he and his sycophants are doing to complete their long-term plan to dismantle our democracy. However, the reason he is in a position that allows him to do this, is found in the state of mind of our general population. In the disturbingly large number of voting Americans, that find a blatantly transparent, pathologically lying criminal, with a very long history of incompetence and corruption in his business dealings, presidential.
After Trumps first six weeks of outrageous, and mostly illegal, actions, focused on attaining complete control, with impunity, over the lives of every citizen in this country, I had hoped that a significant number of those that had elected him, would realize their mistake. Well, it did not happen. Polls indicated that he had a fifty percent approval rating, higher than his approval rating was, after the first six weeks of his first term of office! And now, after 161 days in office, and so, so much more of the same, in so many more contexts, over forty percent of the population still find him presidential. Eight points higher than his pole rating was, at this point of his first term.
History points, across time, to a rise and fall pattern of ruling civilizations. I suspect that is what may be happening here. The falling stage. A growing disconnect in the general population, from a commonsense awareness of the consequences involved, in allowing blatantly transparent billionaire megalomaniacs go about trying to destroy anything, or anyone, that tries to stop them. What is most disturbing in this disconnect, is the extraordinarily large number of Americans whose perceptions of reality no longer seem connected to the minimums of a normal moral compass. An essential component in a functioning democratic society.
I hope I am wrong. I hope there are still enough rational and ethical Americans left, to oust such evil from our leadership options, and our courts of law. However, at this time, I believe the state of human rights, on so many levels, in this country are so compromised that, if I could, I would take my children and grandchildren, elsewhere.
