In times of universal deceit, telling the truth will be a revolutionary act. - George Orwell [1]

Since its founding in May of 2002, Daily Kos has endeavored to get to the truth of issues and the state of our country. As always with all things human, it has been an imperfect but necessary journey. Like science, new information can change the political thesis. As it should.

The wrestling with reality goes on, for that is what we do in all its messy glory. It has never been easy work, only absolutely necessary, for what we do is deeply moral work.

Today’s indecent administration illustrates why.

In a time when an incompetent, vulgar, abusive, and deeply narcissistic man who tried to overthrow a legitimate election has been elected again, the necessity of truth telling is absolute.

In a time when lies have been ignored, cruelty excused, self-righteous ignorance applauded, when false idols rule, truth telling is more than necessary — in it lies our right to exist as a decent trustworthy society. In it rests the futures of our children, grandchildren, and those generations not yet born.

Lives have already been lost. More lives are on the line. Cruelty, greed, ignorant dysfunction, and lust for power are the hallmarks of this administration. Parents have been ripped away from their crying children. Babies have starved to death because of its actions. Americans have been murdered in their homes for simply being Democrats. This administration and its mouthpieces have blood on their hands.

They don’t want us pointing that out. They do not want anyone shining light on their fog of lies.

That truth telling is why our institutions of higher learning, journalists, our Judges, and anyone who does not buy into a deviant administration are under attack.

That is why this site is now in Trump’s DOJ’s crosshairs —

Trump’s DOJ is targeting Daily Kos by Kos President Donald Trump’s Department of Justice is coming after us. That’s not a metaphor. It’s real. I wish I could tell you more, but I’m not allowed to say anything further. Convenient, isn’t it? A perfect gift for an authoritarian regime—using the power of the state to silence dissent and debate, all while shielding Trump from criticism. We’ve watched them go after ActBlue. After Media Matters. I guess it was inevitable that we’d get our turn. But you all know me: I don’t back down from a fight. This is what I’m built for. Mounting a vigorous legal defense doesn’t come cheap, though. And as you all know, independent media isn’t flushed with cash these days. We certainly aren’t. You—our supporters—got us through our legal fight with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and I’m counting on you to help us now. I’m not exaggerating when I say that this one is existential….

The attacks on our rights, to the fundamental rights to think and speak, to congregate, are not about patriotism, courage, or decency. They are always rooted in the lust for power and the control it gives over others. Trump and his administration do not know how to stand on their own two feet without standing on others.

“I learned that it is the weak who are cruel, and that gentleness is to be expected only from the strong.” — Leo Rosten

In spite of its bravado, its posturing and the real damage being done, this is not an administration of strength. It is one of fundamental weakness. Of unexamined fears. Of cowardice. It is one of deeply flawed human beings.

The threats, cruelty, and lashing out reveal that time and time again. Trump and the rest attack the best of this country because it reveals how they do not begin to measure up. All the money in the world will not change that.

Like all abusers and bullies, they will not stop until forced to. That is what truth tellers are called to do. That is why truth tellers are under attack. That is why we must never be made silent.

“Hard times are coming, when we'll be wanting the voices of writers who can see alternatives to how we live now, can see through our fear-stricken society and its obsessive technologies to other ways of being, and even imagine real grounds for hope. We'll need writers who can remember freedom - poets, visionaries - realists of a larger reality.” - Ursula K. Le Guin

This community is special. We lift one another up. We save lives. We share gardening tips, favorite music, and bird watching. We share joys and sorrows. On a bad day we fight. On a good day we learn from each other. In doing so, we make one another better. Together, we have worked to make this country better, to honor in truth its ideals.

That is always worth fighting for.

This community is always worth fighting for.

I know we are hurting. I know we are haunted by the cries of children being ripped away from their parents. We are haunted by a self-righteous hubris that delights in harm. We are haunted by the on-going attack on the decency that this country promised.

I know we are frightened, not for ourselves as much as for our nation — neighbors, families and friends.

But courage is defined by those who are afraid but do what must be done anyway. Trump and his ilk want fear to shut us down. Not on our watch. We will never, ever, give them what they want.

“Life is but a short journey, filled with such horror and beauty, that too often allows our potential and destiny to die unfulfilled or allow us to bloom in ways we never imagined. But I - all of us - really have only one joint destiny: to leave this world a better place for those who follow.” Viola Shipman - The Heirloom Garden.

We’re not alone. Together, we will move mountains. Together, we will rise into better days.

We have work to do.
