It's the height of British summer — bright, warm, dry and no air conditioning to be found.
There are a quarter of a million Americans living here in the UK, I am one of them, and I have noticed more and more American accents than ever before.
Since the first Trump administration in 2017 that has been a steady drip, drip increase in the size of the American expat population.
This, I believe, is most powerful indicator that the US is in a state of decline.
Who are coming over? Usually, it is the best and brightest. A brain-drain of the most highly educated and wealthiest classes.
A record 6,100 Americans applied for British citizenship in 2024, a 26% increase year-on-year and the highest figure ever recorded. The final quarter of 2024, directly after the US election, saw a 40% spike in applications compared to the same period in 2023.

Rightmove reported a 19% rise in inquiries from US-based house hunters about UK properties from January to early May 2025, marking the highest level since 2017. Americans also became the top group of overseas buyers for London's most expensive homes in 2024, purchasing 25% of properties valued over £15 million.

But now I see that it is the young recent graduates. It starts with a semester abroad and soon becomes a quest for UK citizenship.
The trickle is turning into a stream.
