Iranian clerics may have issued a murder fatwa on Trump [1]

We haven't heard the word "fatwa" in a while. Not since Salman Rushdie was attacked after a murder fatwa was issued on him decades before, because of critical descriptions of Mohammed in his book, The Satanic Verses.

A fatwa is a formal legal pronouncement on a point of Islamic law. Sharia law. There may have been one calling for Donald Trump's death for his recent threat in a Truth Social post where he said he knew where Khamenei was hiding and could have taken him out, but didn't. A similar one may have been issued against Benjamin Netanyahu for his comments during the war with Iran before the ceasefire.

The source for the suspected fatwa comes from statements made by Second Grand Ayatollah Hossein Noori Hamenadi. Lev Parnas, a Trump cohort, noted what Hamenadi had said over the weekend. "After Trump's latest unhinged Truth Social post attacking Ayatollah Khomeini, a second Grand Ayatollah, Noori Hamendini, issued an official murder fatwa against Donald Trump."

Parnas provided a quote from Hamendini: "Any insult to the Ayatollah Khamenei is an insult to the foundations of islam. Any individual or state threatening him or striking him or aiding in such a crime is Mohareb --- an enemy of Allah."

The Tehran Times quoted a different cleric. Ayatollah Naser Makeram Shiazi released a statement that said, "Any regime or individual threatening the leaders of the Islamic Ummah and acting on those threats qualifies as a Muharib."

"Muharib" is defined as someone who wages armed Rebellion, terrorism, violent crimes, or other unlawful acts that spread fear and disorder in society. The prescribed punishment for such offenses is death.

Both clerics statements are being interpreted as a fatwa. "Israeli media said the U.S. and Israel tried to harm the leader, but could not figure out his location." The Tehran Times says that Trump has made says several threats of assassination against Khamenei. At least, that's the way they're taking it. Trump just said he could, not that he would. In fact, he said he spared the Ayatollah to allow the ceasefire to take place, and a possible lasting peace. But that's not how the Iranians are taking it. They see it as a death threat against Khamenei, and that puts him in the crosshairs of a murder fatwa.

The Tehran Times says there are 200 million Shia Muslims ready to carry out the order, along many Sunni Muslims who have "grown extrememy fond" of Khamenei for his support of the Palestinians in the last 20 months, since the October 7th attack and Israel's war in Gaza.

The Tehran Times also said on Sunday "Fatwas draw a red line: No tolerance for threats against Ayatollah Khamenei."

Iran's Mehr News quoted Shirazi as saying that Muslims around the world need "to make these enemies regret their words and mistakes."

Khosro K. Isfahani, senior analyst at the National Union for Democracy in Iran, wrote on X, that the fatwa issued by Shirazi was similar to the murder fatwa issued against the author Salman Rushdie for his novel The Satanic Verses which led to a number of assassination attempts.

So, we've got a credible source that says the fatwa has been issued against Trump, as well as comments and statements by two other Ayatollahs that that point to one having been issued, but without any formal text release.

Khamenei himself hasn't put anything up on his X account since June 26th.

If it sounds like a fatwa, and it talks like a fatwa, don't let that fool you, it really is a fatwa.
