Living in the historical area of Gettysburg encourages reflection about ourcommon heritage. For generations, we have taken pride in the founders’ wisdom in establishing a government with checks andbalances. That system has served us well through wars, financial upsand downs cultural change and explosive technological advances. Wethe people have prospered under a government of the people, bythe people, and for the people. This system, however, for all its strength and resilience, has a weakness inherent in the center ofthat last phrase: ‘by the people’. Government offices are notself-executing; their functions have to be carried out by men and women. They, like you or me, can be paragons of virtue or avatars ofa secret vice. Their moral fiber may be tightly woven or lacy. Their intellectual grasp may be sweeping or circumscribed. All qualities affecting their will and ability to perform their duties.

Because we have such a glut of people of dubious intellect and even more questionable backbone in all three branches of the government now, I greatly fear the purposes of government are more and more being used against than ‘for the people’ Trump’s excesses are well-known. He has openly used his position to profit from a number of schemes;he has militarized the application of immigration enforcement with masked goons indistinguishable from brown shirts, he has ignored or flouted his constitutional responsibility to faithfully execute the law, and his tariff obsession is likely to cause considerable economic loss. To name a few examples. The House of Representatives seems caught up in passing the “One Big Beautiful Bill (?!)”cutting medical and social benefits to a huge number of the neediest among us in order to continue tax breaks for the most wealthy. The Senate has gone along with Trump’s nominations of inept, unfit sycophants to critical positions whose most important qualification is willingness to accommodate Trump’s directives. The Supreme Court seems intent on devising arcane reasoning to reach ideological ends. The recent decision about birthright citizenship is a perfect illustration. They used the case to prevent lower courts from issuing nationwide injunctions while at the same time refusing to act on the justice of the merits of the case.

Are we seeing the beginning of an unraveling of the very fabric of our political structures?
