I started Friday’s Shade with the interview with Peter Thiel, which was eye opening but also a bummer. So today begins with some Sunday snark instead.
x They promised 90 trade deals in 90 days. Today is day 80 and there’s still ZERO. The art of no deal. — Republicans Against Trumpism (@rpsagainsttrump.bsky.social) June 28, 2025 at 1:13 PM
x Room for One More on Mount Rushmore? (The President Wants to Know.) ... among the moronic NYT stories this takes the cake www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

The short answer: Not only is there a good argument against adding to an already complete and amazing work of art, but fortunately the stone structure of Mount Rushmore offers nowhere to put Trump’s mug. In the rendering above, his face is carved into stone that isn’t there.

There’s still ICE and DOGE and Iran and tariffs and and and… But the big news now is the “Big Beautiful Bill” which Trump wants passed by July 4. The Senate is in an all-fired hurry and the deadline isn’t the only reason.
Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-ND) made a comment that some are saying is "revealing" in terms of what it says about Donald Trump's so-called "big, beautiful" bill. CNN's Manu Raju reported on a conversation with Cramer, who admitted that Republicans are worried that opposition to the bill might grow if there is a delay in its passage. Specifically, Cramer told Raju that the bill "doesn't get any easier" to pass as people have more time to review it. (Raw Story)
In other words, the bill is a lot more appealing if people don’t actually read it. So the Republicans released it in the middle of the night. Not all Republicans were keen on that.
x Johnson on the GOP bill: I'd like it much better. Right now, I'm not going to vote for a motion to proceed today. We just got the bill, and I got my first copy about 1:23 in the morning this morning.

Where were you in the middle of the night? Elizabeth Warren was wide awake and she’ll tell you why. Listen up for some Democratic fire.
x It’s 2AM on a Sunday and I’m heading to the Capitol to FORCE a full reading of the Republicans’ 940-page bill. This bill will rip health care coverage away from 16 million people and cut food assistance. It’s sick. And we will not stand for it.

Who agrees with her? Elon Musk. His objection isn’t that people suffer from the Big Beautiful Bill — that doesn’t much concern him — but that the “businesses of the future” will be harmed. But still, he’s against it. Politics makes strange bedfellows.
x Someone is having a very bad birthday — Molly Jong-Fast (@mollyjongfast.bsky.social) 2025-06-28T21:13:01.062Z
And, he says, it’s not popular. (Even though it’s the baby of the Republican party, the same face eating leopards he financed.)
The Senate’s current version of the bill differs from what the House passed, but it’s no kinder or gentler.
x New version of the BBB bill, which Hawley supports, would cause 11.8M more Americans to become uninsured, per CBO estimates. That’s up from “only” 10.9M for the House bill, which Hawley had previously objected to. www.cbo.gov/publication/...

Who would get hurt? Among others, Governor Newsom points to seniors in nursing care:
Donald Trump and the GOP are literally throwing seniors out on the street," Newsom claimed. He added that, "1 in 4 nursing homes say they’ll be forced to SHUT DOWN if Trump's Big Beautiful Betrayal becomes law." (Raw Story)
And, as we heard earlier this week, rural hospitals also face risk of closure.

Who wins? For one, ICE gets a whopping budget.
x With this budget, ICE alone would have nearly as large a detention operation as all 50 states' prison systems combined. Bigger budget than the Marine Corps. Police-state levels of spending

And Tom Homan is delighted.
x The budget bill contains tens of billions to fund an army of 10,000 more ICE agents. This is a red alert moment for our democracy.

Not only does ICE cost a lot, but it stands to wreak havoc with the economy in ways that MAGA doesn’t recognize...yet. When local economies are hard hit by the absence of migrant workers, even conservatives may decide to join in “No More ICE” protests.

In case you missed it, the ACLU is fighting to keep birthright citizenship, threatened by the Supreme Court’s decision this week to allow state rulings on the matter to differ.

Methane is an underestimated factor in climate change. But there are solutions to the problem.
Methane traps about 80 times as much heat in the atmosphere as carbon dioxide over 20 years. And methane emissions, which are driving an estimated 45 percent of human-caused warming, are rising rapidly. I now believe that cleaning up methane leaks from the production and shipping of oil and gas — one of the most significant sources of these emissions — is the best hope we have to avoid triggering some of the most consequential climate tipping points in the next decade. I think realistically it is our only hope. (NYT — readable article)

Scientists use bacteria to turn plastic waste into paracetemol. (Paracetemol is known as Tylenol on this side of he pond.)
Chemists have discovered E coli can be used to create paracetamol, also known as acetaminophen, from a material produced in the laboratory from plastic bottles. “People don’t realise that paracetamol comes from oil currently,” said Prof Stephen Wallace, the lead author of the research from the University of Edinburgh. “What this technology shows is that by merging chemistry and biology in this way for the first time, we can make paracetamol more sustainably and clean up plastic waste from the environment at the same time.” (The Guardian)
That would cure an awful lot of headaches.

Many US babies are born without the gut bacteria that helps them digest breast milk.
About three quarters of babies born in the United States may not have enough friendly microbes in their guts to protect against developing allergies, asthma and eczema, a new study suggests... Those gut microbes help train the immune system. Without them, children are prone to allergic conditions, Culler and colleagues found. Babies who had low levels of Bifidobacterium were at least three times as likely to develop allergies, eczema and asthma by the time they were 2 years old than babies with expected levels of those bacteria, the researchers found… Changes in dietary habits toward processed foods and away from fermented foods, use of antibacterial soaps and other changes have also reduced the amount of Bifidobacterium in the environment, both Culler and Gilbert say. “Over three to four generations, we’ve started to see this organism being eradicated from the maternal population, and hence it would not be available to colonize the child,” Gilbert says.
