Saturday Morning Garden Blogging v. 21:26: Roses and More! [1]

Good Morning to the rose version of the SMGB! June 2024 was the 100th year anniversary celebration of the establishment of the E. M. Mills Rose Garden in Syracuse’s Thornden Park. The area was still in a near drought so things were dry and it appeared the roses were peaking early (it was mid June). But it was a lovely Saturday in the mid 70’s. I went with master gardener friends to the event. Free refreshments, demonstrations, and lots of people to ask questions to. So many roses to see and smell! Here are a couple of history links if you’re interested:

E.M. Mills Rose Garden - the Rose Society

Rev. Edmund M. Mills He was quite the widely educated fellow and got his love of roses from his mother.

Welcome to the Saturday Morning Garden Blogging community! We love plants of all kinds, dirt, compost, all places to grow things indoors and outside. Join us, as well, if you just want to browse the lovely photos posted each week. We love new folks!

And here are the roses plus a bit extra….

This is a very photo centric diary. I apologize for not getting the names of the various roses. I didn’t have a way to match them to the photos in my phone. The heading photo is one of my favorites. I think it’s an antique rose of some kind but some of you here maybe can clarify that.

You can tell how dry summer 2024 was….

Lots of orange, pink and yellow along with red and a bit of white. Plus multi colored that looked like candy!

Non Rose Interlude! Thornden Park where the rose garden is located also has other features. This is the pond and stonework just across from the garden to the north. It has been restored in the past 20 years. There also used to be an herb garden but it has disappeared.

Standing at the top of the waterfall above the pond.

Waterfall….

I moved around at the top to get this nice view of the pond area. I think the heat made for algae overgrowth.

Another wide view of part of the garden. If you go to the links I included in the opening paragraphs, you can get some better panoramic views including an old photo of the garden’s establishment. There is a gazebo that you’ll see. There were too many people inside it and I didn’t want to include them so I skipped taking a photo.

More roses!

These are lovely when the climbing roses are all in bloom. Again, the heat and near drought took an early toll.

I love thiese bicolors!

These white/cream roses are a nice rest of the eyes after all the bright colors.

Such a perfectly shaped bloom….

These look like someone painted on the pink color.

I loved this one as it showed all stages of blooms. You can see some still getting ready to pop open.

There’s so much more to the Rose Garden and Thornden Park. A chili cook off in the winter! A big swimming pool. There is an old stone amphitheater that hosts various entertainment in nice weather. Syracuse has so much history. I hope you enjoyed this small, colorful part of it.

NOTE: I will be doing that “blue pot diary” that I’ve talked about. Looks like it will be in September as the schedule is full through August at this point. Get those photos ready of your pots, planters, flower vases, even blue casserole dishes you cook your harvest bounty in. Let’s make it a “blue wave”. Okay, I couldn’t help that...
