I’m with you, those of you who are pushing back on this notion that the democrats need to move right to become more appealing to men - this is for our allies too, those who understand the state of the world...
95% of the violence committed against me in my life has been committed by men. From the age of 3 when I was sexually abused for several years by a family member who nearly smothered me to death, I have sustained molestation, sexual assault, harassment and threats in every decade of my life. I’m 60ish. I don't blame all men but I do know that because we live with inequality, I was never able to go the police for any of this.
We all knew as girls that we had to sustain the violence and take care of our own ptsd - and all the loss and agony that entails - because we would automatically be accused of lying if we told. When women tell of their assaults, we’re guilty until proven innocent. The few times I told, I was drummed out of family, drummed out of a friend group, self-exiled from a theater group I worked for and I witnessed that happen to other women as well.
Get with the facts or get out of the way. We are not to blame for the problems of men. We are not going to take a back seat in any political party or anywhere else. We are not going to decenter ourselves from our own lives to make someone else feel more secure in their supremacy. Wake up or not. That’s up to the individual. We’re not going back to sleep because that’s too dangerous. We want freedom and we will take it.
