. . . . . . . . . .
Let me guess. Thousands of HR departments face audits of employment documents like this one. [1]

Employees must provide documentation to their employers to show their identity and authorization to work.
After a busy month, on a day when annoying things annoyed me, I finally sat down to catch up on email:
As you can see, an email arrived today announcing itself as a second request to resubmit ASAP documentation to prove I can work in the United States. There is mention of an I9 form that I previously completed as part of the employment process nearly a decade ago. The sender was supposedly from our HR department—seemed to have an internal email account. I dismissed it as Phish or as a Phish exercise. HR has been known to send such enticements as an exercise In email security.
I scrolled down to find the the original request from Wednesday with an external link to the I9 form, The request was urgent. The hyperlink was framed by warnings in the banner in the gutter not to open external links. I could not bring myself to click the link—still cannot. I growled—a decade without it being urgent and now concern?
Further down the inbox listwas an email from the practice manager Jim imploring people to believe the mail. “It is legitimate.” It is Friday and Jim is not here to corroborate his message— not responding to texts either.
One of our office assistants walked by then and after I showed her the messages and confessed she had not gotten such mail when she said Lucien —the senior Nurse— had similar emails on Wednesday including a phrase that if he did not respond, his job would be dissolved in two weeks. I was getting angry? Do I need to mention, Lucien was born in another country.
At that point, I short circuited and typed Jim a response email:
“Jim,
The email may be legit but I’m still not sure can hit that hyperlink. Besides, the request is unsavory on several levels.
I will not complete that [I9] form (for the second time) without seeing the last I9 form I completed and will not complete the new form without expressing my disgust. This bureaucratic exercise is a poorly -veiled fishing expedition to find undocumented workers. There is plenty of documentation to say I can work in the United States—and no other country, including the last I9 form I submitted.
From this day forward, I will not respond to HR emails from this source. After today, without approval from you Jim, I will not respond. The emails HR sends say 'external link' all over them. I reject his name from our ‘accepted external link’ list. [This looks like an under-handed security exercise.]
Now, I find from Lucien a threat of losing a job is linked to completion of this form. HR should have records of these already. Understand that any loss of job or privileges will be responded to by legal action on my part. Do not think for one second I am bluffing. I already have drafted a letter to both US senators from our state as well as our present governor. I will gladly send copies to anyone else you request.
KSH”
Sure that was over the top and it may get me nowhere, but if millions of us are getting these emails and thousands of HR departments are facing urgent audits [under pressure from DHS?], we need to push back against this waste of time. DHS can talk to Dept of State without the rest of being bothered.
My wishful theory this is HR just updating missing IDs---making sure RealID or an active passport image is on file. However, the timing is not coincidental. My conspiracy theory is that DOGE has correlated Big data ---state voting registration data to IRS data perhaps---Sierra club membership to political affiliation perhaps----to select particular Individuals for further intimidation. This is the opening salvo.
Anybody else getting these emails?
