GNR for Friday, June 27, 2025: Starfish Throwers [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

Date: 2025-06-27

Welcome 🌻 to Friday’s Roundup of Good News!

Most readers know the story about the little boy, after encountering a huge pile of throwing starfish back into the sea. Alone, he barely makes a small dent in the huge pile of starfish. He’s asked why he does it, when it does not matter to the large number trapped on the shore. As he tosses another, he says: It makes a difference to this one.

These days, the tasks before us may seem insurmountable, but each call you make, each rally you attend, each donation you send, each conversation you hold — these are adding up.

Keep throwing those starfish!

By the way, I looked up the origin of the story. The original is a bit different, and was written by Loren Eiseley. From Wikipedia:

"The Star Thrower" (or "starfish story") is part of a 16-page essay of the same name by Loren Eiseley (1907–1977), published in 1969 in The Unexpected Universe. The Star Thrower is also the title of a 1978 anthology of Eiseley's works (including the essay), which he completed shortly before his death.

It has been adapted many times. From the same Wikipedia article:

The story has been adapted and retold by motivational speakers and on internet sites, often without attribution, since at least the mid-1980s.[1] In this version the conversation is related between other characters, an older man and a younger one, a wise man and a little girl, or Jesus and a man. It appears unattributed in a 1991 novel by Dan Millman, in which a spiritual seeker asks his wise teacher, "[t]here are so many – how can [throwing each starfish back in the water] make any difference?" She replies, "It makes a difference to this one."[2] It was also adapted into a children's story in 2006. Called, "Sara and the Starfish," it re-tells the story from the eyes of a young girl as well as the starfish itself, though the moral of the story is the same as the original idea told by Eiseley.

With all this background information — stuff I admit I did not know — I feel like WineRev!

Anyway, friends, come on in and see what some of the starfish throwers up to. And then, go and do likewise, and toss a few starfish back into the sea.

Note: lots of errands today, so I may not be around much. But you know what to do!

No one here is naïve; we are aware of the many who are fighting to destroy our country. Some of us expected it: the cheating, the lying, and the chaos. But we are here to read the efforts and the positive results of those (including us and our fellow gnus) who are working so hard to save our country and the planet from those very bad people. We are furious with them for what they are doing and we are letting them know.

Remember:

💜Although they lie all the time, reality matters. And our goals — based on reality — are more popular.

💙 They want us to be demoralized. The best way to keep up your spirits is to fight. So, take the time to recharge your batteries, make sure to protect yourself, your family and your friends, but find ways to contribute to the well-being of our country and our world.

Well, he shouldn’t be popular. What he’s doing internationally is unpopular. And domestically, what he’s doing is unpopular too. Steve Benen, MSNBC, MaddowBlog

[First talking about how happy Rs were with bombing Iran] And while it’s easy to believe that the survey the senator touted was accurate, it’s also worth emphasizing an inconvenient detail: There are other people in the United States who aren’t Republicans, and as The New Republic’s Greg Sargent noted, many of them were far less impressed. A surprising new CNN poll [found] that 56 percent of Americans disapprove of Trump’s bombing of Iran, while only 44 percent approve. Strikingly, 60 percent of independents disapprove, suggesting the middle of the country is not with Trump on any of this. ... Note the CNN poll’s remarkable finding that 55 percent of Americans don’t trust Trump to make the right decisions on the use of force in Iran. This includes 62 percent of independents. ✂️ But wait, some Republicans might say, the public might not be overly impressed with Trump’s risky approach to national security and international affairs, but the president has a domestic policy agenda, too. Although that’s true, as NBC News reported, Trump’s domestic priorities aren’t winning any popularity contests, either. President Donald Trump is facing political headwinds for his ‘big, beautiful bill’ as Republican leaders hope to begin votes on it in the Senate this week. Specifically, a raft of new surveys indicate that the GOP is losing the battle of public opinion on a major piece of legislation they’re aiming to pass by July 4. Nonpartisan polls released this month show that voters have a negative perception of the bill. The five polls highlighted in the NBC News report varied a bit (which is to be expected), but support for the GOP’s far-right reconciliation package ranged between 23% and 38%.

We — and others — suspect that the “so-called” moderate Rs will cave with respect to Medicare Robert Davis RawStory

Sixteen House Republicans, all of whom represent competitive districts, sent a letter to party leadership on Tuesday calling on them to abandon the large-scale cuts to Medicaid included in the bill. Overall, Trump's bill seeks to cut more than $700 billion from Medicaid and impose requirements that Medicaid members work at least 20 hours per week to qualify for benefits. “Protecting Medicaid is essential for the vulnerable constituents we were elected to represent," the letter reads in part. "Therefore, we cannot support a final bill that threatens access the coverage or jeopardizes the stability of our hospitals and providers.” Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spokesperson Justin Chermol did not mince words when NBC News asked him to respond to the letter. “Spare us the performative bulls---,” Chermol told NBC News. “These so-called moderates already voted for the largest cut to Medicaid in American history — and when the time comes, they’ll cave to their D.C. party bosses once again to give their billionaire donors a massive tax break.”

🚚 💙 Democrats Deliver 💙 🚚

I thought the NYC mayoral election was really interesting, with how the Democratic socialist won, mostly on making the place affordable. I’m sure billionaires will try to interfere in the general election, but let’s hope they do as well as Musk did in Wisconsin.

Prohibiting those masked terrorists, California introduces bill Blue State Defiance

Over the last six months, we’ve witnessed an alarming rise in disappearances, surveillance, and secretive operations targeting immigrants, international students, researchers, leaders of organizations, protestors, and even elected officials—often under the guise of federal law enforcement. Across the country, individuals have reportedly been abducted by masked, unidentified officers, taken without notice, and detained without immediate access to lawyers or families. In many cases, those targeted have not been accused of a crime, only of participating in protests, speaking out about U.S. foreign policy, or simply being present at immigrant-heavy protests and institutions like universities. In other cases, they are alleged to have obstructed or assaulted law enforcement, even when video evidence contradicts those claims. This is part of a deliberate and escalating federal strategy under the Trump Administration to supercharge his anti-immigrant agenda by using fear, surveillance, and unchecked enforcement to target immigrant communities, dismantle protections, and send a message that no one, not even lawful residents or visa holders, is safe. This crackdown is especially aggressive in Democratic states and sanctuary cities that have chosen to welcome and protect immigrants, directly challenging local values and governance. California legislators just introduced a groundbreaking bill— SB 627, the No Secret Police Act —to prohibit law enforcement officers from hiding their identities behind masks and anonymous uniforms during public operations. The law would require visible identification for all law enforcement, including federal agents operating within the state. And it couldn’t come at a more urgent time. This is the kind of effort we need to be seeing across the country.

“One Big, Beautiful Bill” Has More Provisions That Violate the Byrd Rule, According to Senate Parliamentarian WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Republicans’ “One Big, Beautiful Bill” continues to include provisions that violate the Senate’s Byrd Rule, according to the Senate Parliamentarian, and would be subject to a 60-vote threshold if they remain in the bill. The below provisions are in the Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs Committee title. “There is no better way to define this Big Beautiful Betrayal of a bill than families lose, and billionaires win. Democrats are on the side of families and workers and are scrutinizing this bill piece by piece to ensure Republicans can’t use the reconciliation process to force their anti-worker policies on the American people,” said Ranking Member Jeff Merkley. “The Byrd Rule is enshrined in law for a reason, and Democrats are making sure it is enforced.” Provisions Subject to a 60-Vote Byrd Rule Point of Order Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs State and Local Assistance. This subsection authorizes states to conduct border security and immigration enforcement, which are federal functions. (Section 90005(b)) Loss of Civil Service Protections for New Federal Employees. This section increases the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) contribution rate for new civil servants, effectively reducing take-home pay, if they do not agree to become “at-will” employees. (Section 90101) Filing Fee for Merit Systems Protection Board Claims and Appeals. This section imposes a $350 fee for federal employees to file a case with the Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB), which adjudicates appeals brought by federal civil servants to protect federal merit systems against partisan political and prohibited personnel practices. (Section 90102) Bonuses for Cost Cutters. This section effectively grants authority to agencies to unilaterally rescind funds appropriated by Congress through the establishment of an incentive program for federal employees to identify “unnecessary expenditures,” and permits agencies to transfer such funds to the Treasury. (Section 90105) Charging Labor Organizations for Use of Federal Resources. This section requires federal agency heads to charge federal employee unions a quarterly fee for the use of official time and agency resources by labor representatives. (Section 90106) Executive Reorganization Plans. This section allows the executive branch to reorganize federal government agencies, which could include the transfer, consolidation, or elimination of whole agencies or functions, immediately and without Congressional oversight. (Section 90107) Disposal of USPS Electric Vehicles. This section mandates the sale of all the United States Postal Service’s electric vehicles and infrastructure to support its electric vehicles. (Section 90109(a)-(c)) Review of Certain Federal Outlays Revenues. This section fundamentally changes the agency rulemaking process by prohibiting agencies from implementing, administering, or enforcing any rules with budgetary effects that are not explicitly required by statute. (Section 90201) The Parliamentarian’s advice is based on whether a provision is appropriate for reconciliation and conforms to the limitations of the Byrd Rule; it is not a judgement on the relative merits of a particular policy.

We can thank the late Senator Robert Byrd, a Democrat who died in 2010, for this provision which is helping us 15 years later. More examples:

💜 Unity? 💜

It strikes me that some of these might belong in the Rs corrupt and chaos section. But I thought it important to point out that some GOP politicians are more on our side.

Some GOP politicians are complaining about the parliamentarian, because she has been striking things out of the bill for billionaires. But other GOP politicians seem to appreciate it: Alexander Bolton, The Hill

The decisions prompted a furious reaction from Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R), who called on Thune to fire the parliamentarian ASAP. “The WOKE Senate Parliamentarian, who was appointed by Harry Reid and advised Al Gore, just STRUCK DOWN a provision BANNING illegals from stealing Medicaid from American citizens. This is a perfect example of why Americans hate THE SWAMP,” Tuberville posted on X , the social media site. ✂️ Republican Sen. John Kennedy (La.) told reporters Thursday that he doesn’t think the GOP leadership would attempt to oust the MacDonough from the parliamentarian’s office, asserting that Republicans “respect” her rulings. “I don’t think that will happen,” he said. “We all have respect for the parliamentarian. I think that she’s very fair and I don’t think that she should be fired nor do I think she will be fired.”

Some bipartisanship in Congress responding to tRump and the bombing of Iran Caitlin Yilek, CBS News

Several war powers resolutions were introduced in both chambers before Saturday's strikes to prevent the U.S. from becoming involved in the war between Iran and Israel. The resolutions would require Congress to authorize force against Iran, preventing the president from taking unilateral action. Lawmakers backing the resolutions have emphasized that only Congress has the power to declare war under the Constitution. Following the U.S. attacks on Iran's nuclear sites, Reps. Thomas Massie, a Kentucky Republican, and Ro Khanna, a California Democrat, called on Congress to reconvene immediately to vote on their war powers resolution, which has dozens of cosponsors. House members across the political spectrum, from Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia to Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, have come out against a conflict with Iran, indicating that the resolution could have broad support and pass. But Johnson indicated earlier Monday that it might not get a vote, telling reporters that it's not the "appropriate time" for a war powers resolution.

🌹 Let’s Celebrate Love ❤️

This week we’re celebrating Taylor Swift and her fans, who are generous and kind and, in my opinion, so classy! Andy Corbley Good News Network

Taylor Swift, having recently concluded the record-breaking Eras tour, visited Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Florida. Passing between rooms in a lithe sage-green dress, she touched the hearts of the children undergoing treatment for life-threatening illnesses including cancer and cardiomyopathy. It was on June 12th that Shaneka Holloman, the mother of a 7-year-old transplant recipient and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy survivor, Majesty, received a phone call asking if her daughter would like to come to a “function.” ✂️ “ She touched her hair to make sure Taylor was real,” Holloman told the USA TODAY Network. “I didn’t know what to say. I didn’t know what to do. This is Taylor Swift, America’s sweetheart.” The two talked for around 15 minutes, after which Majesty asked if she could have Swift’s phone number. The event swept across “swifty” socials, and soon, a GoFundMe set up by Holloman to fund Majesty’s treatment had received thousands in donations. At publishing time it has surpassed $16K.

Of course, it would be so much better if the US had good health insurance for its citizens, but that doesn’t detract from the basic goodness spread by Taylor Swift, who donates so much.

Orcas making and using tools! Seaweed in order to groom each other Cristen Hemingway Jaynes EcoWatch

Orca whales have been observed biting off lengths of kelp and using the strands to massage each other — the first known evidence of marine mammals making tools. A group of killer whales off the coast of the United States and Canada were seen removing the ends of seaweed stalks, putting them between their bodies and rolling them for long periods, likely for play and to strengthen social bonds, and possibly to remove parasites or dead skill cells. “We were amazed when we first noticed this behaviour,” said Dr. Michael Weiss, research director at the Center for Whale Research (CWR), in a press release from the University of Exeter.

🍄 First-ever mushroom casket burial could signal trend to more planet-friendly traditions Cristen Hemingway Jaynes EcoWatch

With all the chemicals, wood and land used in traditional burials, they can be detrimental to the environment. Now, a company from the Netherlands has developed a casket made entirely of mycelium — the network of thread-like structures that make up mushroom roots — that biodegrades within 45 days of burial. The innovative Loop Living Cocoon mushroom casket is grown in one week and enriches the soil while nourishing new plant life. Recently the first burial using a mushroom casket took place in North America, on a peaceful hillside in rural Maine, a press release from Loop Biotech said. “My father always told me that he wanted to be buried in the woods on the property that he loved so much,” said Marsya Ancker, who chose a mushroom casket for the burial of her father Mark C. Ancker. “He wanted his final resting place to nourish the land and plants he cherished.” Since 2021, Netherlands-based Loop Biotech has facilitated more than 2,500 burials using mushroom caskets all over Europe, but the service in Maine was a first for North America. x First-Ever Mushroom Casket Burial in North America Could Signal Cultural Shift Toward More Planet-Friendly Traditions www.ecowatch.com/mushroom-cas... ☀️ Largest European solar farm starts operations in France Paige Bennett EcoWatch

A new solar farm is operational as of June 20 in Perthes, France and is currently the largest floating solar farm in Europe. “On an area of former gravel pits, Q Energy is realising Europe’s largest floating solar power plant to date with 74.3 MW. And many more will follow,” Q Energy said on its website. The floating solar site, called Les Îlots Blandin, took over the location of a former 127-hectare gravel extraction pit that shut down in 2020. Q Energy and Velto Renewables identified the former industrial site as a promising location for floating solar technology and spent several years of planning before construction began in September 2023, Energy Global reported. According to Q Energy, the site offered a favorable location for generating solar energy, and it had minimal conflicts over land use, an issue that can limit renewable energy projects.

💙 What You Can Do to Rescue Democracy 💙

It turns out that participation in democracy is not just an every-four-years event but requires active participation, like, whenever you can find time.

I know it’s tough to see the path forward. And I can’t guarantee that there is a path forward. But people who are smarter and braver than I have seen ways to move ahead.

Their (the fascists’) plans really are dark, but many of them are also dumb, in the sense that they don’t make sense. So many of them cannot succeed.

Here are some quick hits.

Stay involved. Yeah, that’s tough. I want to look away too, but by taking simple actions you can make a difference. Keep contacting your representatives, both in DC and at home.

Support causes that will fight. Send money if you can. Also, spread their news with clicks and conversation.

Slow them down. Oppose and block at every turn.

Make tRump unpopular. Doing this weakens him. And it should not be that difficult. The GOP made a lot out of Biden is old and eggs cost too much. Well, tRump is older than Biden was at the beginning of his term and tRump has no policies that are going to bring down inflation. And a host of other problems, like he’s a convicted felon.

Divide the GOP from each other. They are a coalition based on contradictory promises, so there’s plenty to work with.

Keep telling the truth and showing love.

Make sure to pace yourselves in this marathon and to practice self-care.
