WITCH HUNT! Trumpers want Zohran Mamdani deported [1]

Remember when Republicans warned us that pursuing charges against Donald Trump was part of a politically motivated witch hunt? After all, they told us, since we couldn’t beat him at the ballot box, we’d put him in jail. Well, that talking point now stands debunked in the wake of how they’re handling the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination for mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani.
I have some serious misgivings about Mamdani. Indeed, I doubt I would have ranked him or Andrew Cuomo had I lived in New York. But there is no defending recent calls from a number of Republicans to have Mamdani deported.
It started with the New York Young Republican Club. The group—which by all accounts has gone full-on MAGA--called for Trump and his two point men on immigration, Stephen Miller and Tom Homan, to revoke Mamdani’s naturalization and deport him back to Uganda under the Communist Control Act.

Apparently the Young Republicans didn’t know that the Communist Control Act—written at the height of the Red Scare—has almost never been enforced due to a slew of legal challenges. Indeed, according to the First Amendment Center, much of it was repealed by Congress only a year later.
Rep. Andy Ogles of Tennessee got into the act, writing Attorney General Pam Bondi to ask her to revoke Mamdani’s naturalization.

So for the better part of three years, the GOP claimed prosecuting Trump despite hard evidence of criminal conduct was politically motivated. Now, just because Mamdani has views they don’t like, GOP muckety-mucks want him deported. At risk of sounding Trumpian, folks, this really is a WITCH HUNT!
This could potentially explode in the GOP’s faces. There has been talk that Mamdani’s presence on the ballot opens the door for the nominee of the city’s long-moribund GOP, Curtis Silwa, to win. However, in a city where Democrats outnumber Republicans by something like 6-to-1 and where the GOP has been more or less nonexistent since the Mike Bloomberg era, even then Silwa would need literally everything to break right. He also needed for his Republican compatriots to avoid stepping on rakes. This move by the GOP is manna from heaven for Mamdani.
No matter if you think Mamdani is too far left, what the GOP is doing is inexcusable. It’s undemocratic. It’s un-American. And it’s, once again, a WITCH HUNT!
