Geo-engineering is a Trojan Horse, Don’t Buy It!

I recently received this plaintive from Care 2 Petitions regarding plans by the UK to try and block sunlight with “cloud, brightening, and stratospheric aerosol injection”.
I provide their message here:
In an alarming move, the U.K. government has announced funding for real-world solar radiation modification (SRM) experiments aimed at artificially cooling the planet. SRM experiments, such as cloud brightening and stratospheric aerosol injection, aim to reflect sunlight and cool the Earth. While this initiative may seem like a quick fix to the climate crisis, experts warn the potential long-term consequences are understudied and could devastate the planet. Sign the petition to ask the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to begin regulating geo-engineering to protect the environment and prevent dangerous climate manipulation! While the intention is to improve the climate, these methods have not been proven safe. These changes could trigger severe effects like droughts, changes in rainfall, and even affect the entire global ecosystem, including vital areas like the Amazon rainforest. The most troubling aspect is the lack of international regulation governing such experiments. Private companies and governments are operating with little oversight, risking unpredictable and possibly catastrophic environmental changes. We urgently call on the IPCC to regulate these potentially dangerous experiments and work towards a global framework that regulates geo-engineering. Over the last couple years I’ve written at least twice about Geo engineering as well as spoken out against it in comments to diaries here trying to promote it.

I see it as a ‘Trojan horse’ being offered to us by corporations and financial interests, because, rather than curbing consumption, which they will go to any lengths to stop, GeoE theoretically allows it to continue by masking the symptoms of the potentially fatal wound we’ve inflicted upon Gaia.

According to the Guardian article, scientists proposing geo-engineering are not suggesting that we engage in full scale attempts, but rather small scale controled experiments and studies employing “no toxic substances” to see what might be feasible without further harming the environment.
Detractors feel that by focusing on environmental manipulation, we are distracting from the ultimate necessity of curbing harmful emissions, which we would be perfectly capable of doing at any time, were it not for the interference of the fossil fuel industry, as well as power and money interests and our own reluctance to give up our current consumer lifestyle.
They also point to the issue of trying to control and regulate these efforts as corporations and various countries try their own attempts at Geo-engineering.
As I’ve mentioned in the past, we have a horrendous track record when we try to interfere with the natural order of things in our attempts to shape results that we take to be to our liking or benefit (ie. attempt to profit from). These results range from exploding rabbit populations in Australia to hydroelectric dams, which, among other ills, ‘stew’ and spew methane into the atmosphere.
Nature establishes and maintains a harmonious balance through the interaction of all its components and for the most part, natural alterations to this system this is a gradual process. When man comes in and attempts to perform invasive surgery, it throws the entire clockwork of connectivity into disarray. Gaia can’t absorb and adjust to the disruptions fast enough, which usually leads to detrimental ‘unforeseen’ or even catastrophic results.
Our current stripping and squandering of planet resources and our criminal discharge of poisons into the environment, is in-and-of-itself Geo engineering gone rogue.
Buynotts, boycotts, and No-Buy-Friday are all effective means for addressing the threat of our climate emergency. They provide a simple method for people to begin detoxing from their addiction to runaway obsessive compulsive consumerism. By participating in a manageable adjustment of consumer behavioral patterns, individuals are reintroduced to a balanced and sustainable lifestyle, which so many have lost sight of.
On a psychological level, our self-worth is being crushed under the mass of material goods we continuously ‘middleman’ into landfills. This tempting ‘trash-nouveau’, gets tossed on the smoldering ashes of ‘human potential’ — shitting us into the black hole of oblivion.
History hollers, warning us that geo-engineering ‘promises’ may very well accelerate rather than alleviate this process, while offering us only an excuse for continuing to indulge in self-destructive habits. It is a vain attempt on the part of business to sustain the status quo rather than move towards mutually beneficial sustainability.
Don’t buy it!
Cutting our consumption is the only safe way to lower greenhouse emissions down to safe levels — as proven by the Pandemic Shutdown.
