There Was A Red Hatter (With apologies to There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly) There was a red hatter who swallowed Trump's lies.

I don’t know why she swallowed those lies.

She ain't too wise - There was a red hatter who swallowed some spin

From Newsmax who said the Iran War Trump did win

She swallowed the spin to feed the lies

But I don't know why she swallowed the lies

She ain't too wise - There was a red hatter who swallowed Fox bull

Your brain ain't whole if you swallow their bull

She swallowed bull to feed the spin

From Newsmax who said libs are livin' in sin

She swallowed the spin to feed the lies

But I don't know why she swallowed the lies

She ain't too wise - There was a red hatter who swallowed the line

That tax cuts for rich folks would trickle down fine

She swallowed the line to feed the bull

She swallowed the bull to feed the spin

From idiots like Hegseth (ever reeking of gin)

She swallowed the spin to feed the lies

But I don't know why she swallowed the lies

She ain't too wise - There was a red hatter who swallowed this dirt:

"Immigrants are devils who we must subvert!"

She swallowed the dirt to feed the line

She swallowed the line to feed the bull

She swallowed the bull to feed the spin

From the orange man who said tariffs will make us all win

She swallowed the spin to feed the lies

But I don't know why she swallowed the lies

She ain't too wise - There was a red hatter who swallowed a fact

She's dead, of course.

And now, our feature presentation...

Cheers and Jeers for Thursday, June 26, 2025

Note: A quick reminder that tomorrow morning, June 27th, at 10am, everybody—you included—needs to meet at the city square (between the post office and the bank) for the annual lottery. Please get there promptly (I'm looking at you, Tessie Hutchinson, the breakfast dishes can wait) so we can start picking the ballots out of the hat and determine who has the black spot. And don’t forget sunscreen—those UV rays can kill ya. —Joe Summers

Your Thursday Molly Ivins Moment:

Despite all the fine work George W. Bush and Co. are doing to convince Americans that the economy is tickety-boo and double jump-up jim dandy, for some reason many Americans remain stubbornly unpersuaded that things actually are getting better. Perhaps that would be because they're not getting better for most people. […] And let me point out that the reason we're in an "economic recovery" is because of increased worker productivity—we work harder, they get the money. Folks, this is what the Bush administration is really about. While we're all distracted with 9-11 and the war on terrorism, it is steadily making this country less fair and making life harder for most citizens. How long are you going to put any credence at all into what they tell you?

CHEERS to the aftermath. The Democratic mayoral primary in New York City—aka “The Windy Apple”—where Zohran Mamdani romped to a landslide win over that Cuomo fella, is behind us. And that means it's time for the media to trot out…The Takeaways!!! Let's Google and see how many they came up with this time:

The New York Times: 5 takeaways The Hill: 5 takeaways CNN: 5 takeaways The Guardian: 6 takeaways NBC New York: 5 takeaways Patch: 5 takeaways

And so on and so forth. But one takeaway lorded over all others in this contest: progressives rule, centrists drool.

JEERS to missions not accomplished. Speculation is still flying about exactly what our taxpayer-funded "bunker busters" did to Iran. While Mad King TACO says the country's nuclear weapons program is "gone for years," more sober assessments are saying maybe months. But I'm sick and tired of this foolish guessing game, so I sent Squirrel Team Six over to Fordo to do an accurate damage assessment, free of bias, opinion, and bloviating. They report the following:

12 centrifuges: damaged 6 tool sheds: leveled Fleet of pickup trucks 1 day past the expiration of their extended warranty: blown head gaskets Future home of Trump Tower Fordo? Drop ceilings mixed with 300,000 gallons of water from exploded fire sprinkler system: what a mess!!! 1 "This Facility Has Gone ___ Days Without A Workplace Accident" sign: melted 1 "Hang In There, It's Almost Friday" poster: singed 45 white lab coats hanging on pegs: reduced to pile of buttons Ye Olde Fordo Doughnut Shoppe: destroyed on specific orders of J.D. Vance Overall nuclear program: damaged but still there

Oh, and one more thing. My lawnmower that they borrowed but never returned: ain't seein' that again. Thanks a lot, Hegseth.

CHEERS to speaking up. The United States Department of Justice has become, in record time, the most corrupt law-ignoring law enforcement agency in our country's history. They serve the Mad King and the Mad King only, and are willing to shit on our nation's rules and regulations for him. We know this from what we see with our own eyes, and also from what former employees say they saw with theirs behind closed doors. Gold star to this fired employee for testifying before Congress:

The attorney, Erez Reuveni, a veteran of over 14 years at the department who had been praised and promoted for his service, was put on leave and then fired earlier this year after his attorneys say he pushed back against three different Justice Department attempts to "defy" immigration-related court orders "through lack of candor, deliberate delay, and disinformation." You can now count on our justice system for nothing. While Reuveni has not spoken publicly about his departure, a whistleblower report sent to senior congressional leadership by his attorneys details how he says he was "threatened, fired, and publicly disparaged" in his final weeks in the department after he questioned instructions from top Justice Department officials to ignore court orders and misrepresent facts in court in three separate, high-profile standoffs between the department and federal judges over immigration cases.

Let's make Reuveni our chief prosecutor when they line up Pam Bondi and her criminal cohorts in court, shall we? Yes. Let's.

CHEERS to workin' on the wire without a net. 179 years ago this week, in 1846, New York and Boston were linked by telegraph wires for the first time. Unfortunately people kept tripping over them, so the following week they invented the telegraph pole.

CHEERS to seeing the rainbow at the end of the tunnel. Pride Month—30 days of parades, festivals, dubious corporate tie-ins, MAGA freakouts and, of course, LGBTQ-related polling—is nearing its end. One of the longer-running polls, by Gallup, measures support for same-sex marriage. Sorry, haters in Hater Land, but they’ve got another year of bad news for you:

A decade after the Supreme Court’s milestone Obergefell v. Hodges ruling declared same-sex marriage a national right in the U.S., a steady 68% of Americans support it. […] The MAGA war on “woke” and DEI is working, but only on their mush-brained cultists. Since 2021, the percentage of U.S. adults who think marriages between same-sex couples should be recognized with the same rights as traditional marriages has ranged from 68% to 71%. Yet, this stability in Americans’ backing for same-sex marriage masks shifts in partisans’ views over the same period. Democrats’ support has risen to 88%, the record high for this group by one percentage point. Independents’ backing for same-sex marriage has been relatively stable in recent years and currently stands at 76%, one point shy of the record high. Majorities of U.S. adults in most demographic subgroups think same-sex marriage should be legal and say same-sex relations are morally acceptable.

The slowpokes to the acceptance table? Of course—the conservative God Squad, for whom "love thy neighbor" and "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" are inviolable rules from God's lips to their ears…right up until the moment they develop a convenient case of hearing loss. They really should pray harder for one 'o them new Beltones.

Ten years ago in C&J: June 26, 2015

JEERS to a microscopic ripple in the pond. Yesterday Bobby Jindal, using camera work that would be right at home in Fellini's world, announced his run for the presidency. Or as it's better known: his run for the vice presidency. Or as it's better known: his political farewell tour before he takes a cushy job on K Street or Wall Street. Some predictions in life are easy pickins.

And just one more…

CHEERS to singin’ in church. As the MAGA cult in Congress continues not passing gun-control legislation, we note that ten years ago today, while eulogizing the recently-murdered Rev. Clementa Pinckney at Charleston, South Carolina's Emanuel A.M.E. Church, President Barack Obama paused for the longest time. You could hear a pin drop, it got so quiet. Was he too choked up to go on? Had he lost his place in his sermon? Had he, after consoling so many other audiences in the wake of gun massacres, simply run out of f*cks to give?

Not quite. He was just winding up to deliver an emotional grand finale from his soul that would once again demonstrate why he’ll always be placed in the top ranks of all the presidents. Watch as the faces behind him light up…

His immediate successor, who never bothered to learn the words to the national anthem or God Bless America, let alone Amazing Grace, botched every attempt—I can count the number of times on one hand and still have some fingers left over—to comfort families who lost loved ones to gun violence. (Up to and including slapping his autograph on giant photos of dead victims.) I guess if you want to show you have a heart, you have to…y’know…have a heart.

Have a nice Thursday. Floor's open...What are you cheering and jeering about today?
