Blind Trusts for All [1]

America was founded in part as a reaction against privileged elites using political power to extract disproportionate wealth from society. Since then, our government has operated within that same fundamental tension. The Trump administration is tilting the balance sharply in favor of plutocrats, and the accelerating forces of technology are likely to intensify this shift as AI erodes middle-class jobs and increases economic inequality. Four years of Republican structural corruption risk establishing new norms that may prove difficult to unwind.

If and when Democrats return to power, meaningful reform of both government structure and political finance will be essential. One proposal I haven’t seen widely discussed is requiring every elected federal official to place all assets above a certain threshold (perhaps two personal residences and $2 million in other assets) into a blind trust, effective from their first day in office until at least one year after leaving. Such a requirement would help filter out those whose primary motivation is personal gain and would create a structural check on the kind of self-dealing and corruption that has already so deeply embedded in our current political system. While it wouldn’t solve the problem entirely, I would be far more inclined to support candidates who make such a commitment.
