Funny how things work, isn’t it?
Two days ago, my daughter told me that a friend was coming by for a visit—he and his lady friend broke up recently, and he was having a hard time. My husband and I were just hanging out, indulging in one of our favorite pastimes (reading). Her friend arrived, and they listened to music and chatted, then after an hour or so she brought him in to meet us. The first thing I noticed were his eyes—a particularly lovely shade of light green, very piercing and direct. I greeted him and then, rather uncharacteristically, I complimented him on his eyes.
That lead to him sitting down on the couch and sharing some of his life story with us. He was born to a 17-year old single mom, and for the first four years of his life was raised on The Farm in Tennessee. But he always missed having a father, and with his mother’s help tracked him down when he was in his late teens.
So this is where it gets interesting. After he left, I was pondering on his eyes and realizing that one of the things that attracted my notice was that I recognized them. Then I remembered that I’d only heard of someone with his name (it’s not a real usual one) once before, years ago—when a friend of mine introduced me to her childhood friend, who’d gone to The Farm to have her son.
Oh--wow.
That’s who visited my daughter—the son, whom I had met perhaps twice, over forty years ago when he was a babe in his mother’s arms. But I never forgot those eyes…
He returned for another visit yesterday, and I told him my revelation. We had a good chin wag, and he mentioned that his mother still does tie-die. I told him I’d love to purchase a tee-shirt from her, so he asked me my preferred colors. And dropped by a few hours ago to give me a truly lovely tie-dye tee-shirt, in muted but cheerful colors—it really is a masterpiece. I sent him off with a jar of Meyer lemon marmalade, and we told him not to be a stranger—he’s family.
