The Polson Flathead Lake Museum in Polson, Montana, has an exhibit called Blanche Harding’s Lewis and Clark Adventures with Marionettes. Lewis and Clark, often pronounced as though it is a single word, refers to the U.S. Corps of Discovery. The U.S. Corps of Discovery, led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, left St. Lewis in 1804 to travel up the Missouri River and then to the Pacific Ocean while exploring the newly acquired Louisiana Purchase. In addition to Lewis and Clark, the Corps of Discovery included York (Clark’s black slave) and 36 other men. The Corps was later joined by Toussaint Charbonneau, a French-Canadian trapper and fur trader who had lived with the Hidatsa for five years, and his Shoshone wife, Sacagawea.

According to popular mythology, Lewis and Clark were the first to cross North America. However, the explorers had with them Alexander MacKenzie’s Voyages from Montreal, which details MacKenzie’s 1793 trip across North America. MacKenzie’s book inspired Jefferson and Lewis to plan the trip.
