My new favorite word: SCHMUCK [1]

It’s time to get caught up on what this delightful word means.

Here’s a list of definitions from various sources:

Oxford languages — deserving contempt; despicable.

Common usage — stupid, foolish, obnoxious, contemptible, a detestable person.

Yiddish — “shmok” translates to penis. Old Polish “smok” translates to grass snake, and German “Schmuck” is jewelry.

Another choice quote: “A schmuck is, in short, someone who lacks, not intelligence, but ALL insight into what is humanly appropriate and what is not.” This I agree with but not what follows: “This makes his condition remediable. A schlemiel, schlimazel, and schmendrick are irredeemably what they are. A schmuck can be enlightened.”

so choose your descriptors with care. I still like schmuck.
