Kos and Kossacks misread a poll [1]

Kos currently has a diary up on how Democrats should lean to the middle, or at least, the center-left, if they want to win. But he is misreading the poll he cites. And so are most of the readers of his article. And apparently, so did Harris and the consultants guiding the Democratic Party. While Kos gets the moderate consensus of 31% right as the largest group, he fails to note that if you add up the two right wing responses and the two moderate to just left of center responses, both tally up exactly 44%. That is, the US electorate is exactly tied, as election after election has demonstrated since 2000.

Where are the critical, missing voter?

On the left.

Here’s the poll results:

The 6% who support Green New Deal and economic justice policies make up the crucial missing voters that shift the electorate from a 44-44% tie. The mythical moderate Republican or Swing voter on the moderate-right is just that: mythical. The real likely voters who make the difference are the “hippies” the Democratic leadership love to punch. And, in 2024, they largely did not vote, or voted for other parties in protest at Democrats pursuing, with the help of Liz Cheney, the moderate-right swing voter or constitutional Republican (of which there are a few, but obviously not anywhere near enough). Or they are the voters who opposed shipping bombs to Israel to bomb Palestinians. The NY mayoral primary just showed us a strong left of center appeal mobilizes not just the missing likely voters, but apparently a lot of not so likely voters.

Now, I am a moderate left of center on most things and fall squarely amongst the 31% and the 13%. I do oppose unfair trade and support legal immigration over exploited undocumented immigration. But I am strongly Green New Deal and oppose not just big corporations but also want to end the billionaire control over us all by taxing them like Eisenhower did. (And Eisenhower was a moderate!) Appealing to those of us in the 6% is the way to win—and the apparently even larger group who are not voting at all because no one is speaking to their issues.

Cuomo, the moderate to conservative, lost. Guess who won? Guess who fills stadium after stadium in red states? It’s not Liz Cheney or the very few principles former Republicans like her.
