Going to the bathroom in a restaurant [1]

Sometimes, you gotta, you know.
You stroll into a restroom, you do your business, and you leave, preferably washing your hands first.
But what happens when you look like me? Not quite a girl. Not quite a guy.
In the old days, you just went to the bathroom. It was nobody’s business. If you were there, that was where you were supposed to be.
Now, vigilantes rove around making sure that you peed where they thought you should.
But, again, what happens when you look like me? Not quite a girl. Not quite a guy.
Wherever you go, you’re not supposed to be there.
Back in the old days, eh, who cared? You went in, you did your business, you left.
Now, you have to look at the people you are going to the restaurant with. Do you expect trouble? Is there a chance that going to the bathroom will get you beaten or killed?
I never worried. Never once. In my entire life.
Until this week.
This week, for the first time, I was scared to use a bathroom.
You are now 1 degree of separation from a person scared to use a bathroom for fear of their lives.
It’s personal now.
It’s someone you know.
Someone who has been part of your community for over 20 years.
Someone you’ve laughed with, or shaken your fist with. Someone you’ve celebrated with and commiserated with.
It’s personal now.
Stop treating this as something that happens to other people. Or something that is theoretical.
It has come for me.
It will come for you.
Oh, btw, I am a cis-gendered female.
