GNR June 25, 2025: Self Care and Good News. [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

Date: 2025-06-25

Where did June go! Well y’all can blame me for the East Coast heatwave. Ended up getting some work scheduled that my house needed this week. Had to take the puppies out (one at a time) on leash out front because of the workmen in the fenced back and side yard.

So to start, yes things suck, but good news still abounds. The flippers are flopping and the worst of the threats are being pushed back on. And still things suck. But we are here to think about the good news and choose joy as a form of resistance

Self Care

So I’m going to start off with some self care and a site that is new to me, showed up on one of my feeds and someplace I’m going to check on regularly Greater Good: Science-based insights for a meaningful life.

Today I will highlight the Happiness Calendar which opens to a pdf. It has a something to do every day. Today is: Share your story to help you heal.

Don’t like that I found another Happiness Calendar at Action for Happiness dot org. Today is: Show your appreciation to people who are helping others. Way to go Colleen Lambo!

x “I give my time because I can — and because I believe every animal deserves comfort, care, and compassion,” veterinarian Colleen Lambo told Nice News. “Supporting their well-being means the world to me.” ❤️

And the Quote of the day from Greater Good on the 24th seem appropriate

"The consensus among researchers is that the citizens of democracies do tend to be happier and healthier than those in more authoritarian countries." ― Why Is Democracy Worth Defending? , by Jeremy Adam Smith

So onto the Good News.

Guess who isn’t working for the Government

x SCOOP: 'Big Balls' has officially left the building. 19-year-old technologist Edward Coristine, a key operative in Elon Musk's so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) who's gone by the name "Big Balls" online, has resigned, the White House tells WIRED.

Coristine received full-time employment status at the GSA late last month, as reported by WIRED. As of Tuesday afternoon, his Google Workspace account with the General Services Administration (GSA) was no longer active, according to a source with direct knowledge. His name also no longer appears on a White House contact list of current DOGE employees on the federal payroll maintained by a senior administration official, the official says.

Don’t let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya.

Peace Price Nomination Withdrawn

Oleksandr Merezhko, the head of Ukraine's parliamentary foreign committee, told Newsweek on Tuesday he had "lost any sort of faith and belief" in Trump and his ability to secure a ceasefire between Moscow and Kyiv.

Poor Donnie-John, maybe if he ends all the wars, ceases all the fire, and all the vagueness he promises he might get back on the list.

Mahmoud Khalil reunited with his wife, newborn son

The judge also cited several “extraordinary circumstances” in Khalil’s case that led him to order his release, including “that there is a due process violative effort to punish” the Columbia University graduate who played a central role in negotiations on behalf of pro-Palestinian student protesters last year. Khalil “is not a flight risk, and the evidence that has been presented to me at least is that he is not a danger to the community, period, full stop,” Farbiarz said.

State AGs Pushing Back

Arguing that the federal administration’s actions violate the Administrative Procuredures Act, the AGs have asked a federal judge to permanently clarify that federal regulations do not grant federal agencies “unfettered power” to terminate funding already awarded. Or, as an alternative, they have asked a judge to toss the Trump administration’s interpretation of the clause in question. The request, if granted, would apply to all existing and future federal grants.

They took 5 words (and there is a … in the 5 chosen words). “no longer effectuates…agency priorities” to justify their slash and burn through the scientific grants. Sorry I didn’t have the bandwidth to read the whole act to find out what is in the …

Nuevo sistema español de captura satélites muertos

In this scenario, ESA has trusted the Spanish company GMV and its Cat system, a technology designed after two years of work and one million euros of investment, to remove all satellites that are out of service from orbit using basically a space claw to catch satellites in mid-flight, hence the name Cat. This claw will be mounted on a space vehicle that is capable of approaching in a synchronized and safe manner, since the satellites that are withdrawn are already incapable of maneuvering. Once the satellite is captured, the vehicle pushes them towards the Earth until they enter the atmosphere and they end up disintegrating before reaching land.

Yea Spain!

Senate Parliamentarian says they can’t sell off public lands in the Budget Bill.

x A win! Thank you to everyone who spoke out! After facing bipartisan resistance, the Senate Parliamentarian, ruled that Sen. Mike Lee’s proposal to sell off millions of acres of federal land cannot be included under reconciliation rules. — Alt National Park Service (@altnps.bsky.social) June 24, 2025 at 6:43 PM

So many of us found our 2025 bingo cards were off

x My #ncga session previews this year were wildly off, as I did not foresee shrimp trawling and raw milk as the legislature's most controversial topics of the year. #ncpol — Colin Campbell (@raleighreporter.bsky.social) June 24, 2025 at 1:37 PM

And if you think Democrats are Tired

x Democratic state attorneys general vowed Monday on Capitol Hill to continue legal challenges against President Donald Trump’s “outrageous overreach” through executive orders to strip birthright citizenship, impose staggering global tariffs, thwart lifesaving medical research and more. #ncpol
