America's Immigration Challenge: A Business Case for Practical Reform [1]

Mass deportation proposals may sound decisive, but numbers reveal their impracticality. Removing one million undocumented immigrants per year would cost at least $88 billion annually and shrink U.S. GDP by 4.2–6.8%—equivalent to losing the economic output of the state of Texas. Over a decade, deportations could reduce GDP by up to $1.6 trillion.

By contrast, comprehensive immigration reform—including streamlined court processes and market-based work visas—would cost roughly $35 billion per year and boost GDP by 3.3–4.8% over ten years, adding up to $8.9 trillion in real growth and reducing federal deficits by $175–850 billion depending on the time horizon and scenario modeled.
