Tomorrow in Primary Day for NYC. The Primary is for Mayor, City Comptroller, Public Advicate (nb: this was an office created in 1993 to provide a slot for the incumbent City Council President (replaced by a non-elected Speaker), Ciry Council members and Borough President. There were nine days of early voting and an opportunity for mail in ballots.
Voting is on paper ballots which are scanned for counting. Early voting ballots have already been tallied. Mail ballots already received have been tallied, however any ballots postmarked by tomorrow and received by July 1 will be counted.
NYC offices utilize ranked choice voting in Primary elections. Voters can rank up to five candidates for each office. In each round of counting, the candidate with the lowest number of votes is eliminated and the next choice of the voter is added to that candidate’s total.
Polls are open from 6 AM to 9 PM. Once the polls close, results of the first round of voting, combining early voting. primary Day voting and mail ballots received to date will be publicly reported. On July 2, updated first round numbers will be reported followed by subsequent round voting totals, until one candidate has a majority of all votes cast.
