Treatment for GOP Rep's lethal ectopic pregnancy delayed by FL abortion laws - she blames Democrats [1]

On May 31, 2024, Rep. Kat Cammack (R-FL) discovered firsthand what happens when politicians dictate women's healthcare. Soon after discovering she was expecting, she was hit with the devastating news that she had an ectopic pregnancy — and the fetus was non-viable. It was a time for empathetic and immediate medical support. But because of Florida's draconian and penalty-heavy anti-choice legislation, she was left in medical limbo.
On Sunday, she shared her experiences with the Wall Street Journal. This is how the Independent (no paywall) reported it:
Florida Republican Rep. Kat Cammack has revealed that she almost died last year as a result of her state's six-week abortion ban, which left hospital staff reluctant to treat her ectopic pregnancy for fear of criminal prosecution. Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, Cammack, 37, reported her experiences in an unnamed Florida hospital's emergency room on May 31 2024 when it was discovered that there was no way for her baby's embryo to survive and that her own life was in danger without action. A doctor discovered the embryo implanted where the fallopian tube meets the uterus, a cornual ectopic pregnancy, and frankly told the representative: "If this ruptures, it'll kill you."
In a civilized state, the next step is obvious. Drop everything and save the mother. There is no other consideration. Even if you believe that life starts at conception, what Cammack had in her body now was a clump of cells with no future other than to cause Kat's death.
But because this was 'pro-life' Florida, saving a life was not her doctors' primary consideration. Staying out of jail guided their 'treatment' of their fatally compromised patient. The report continues:
But after deciding against surgery, the facility's doctors and nurses had to be persuaded to give her the shot of methotrexate she required to expel the pregnancy. That was because the state's six-week ban had come into effect at the start of that month, causing staff to fear they could lose their medical licenses and be sent to jail if they gave her the drug, which blocks the flow of folic acid to the embryo to prevent its growth.
Luckily for Cammack, she had what most women lack — clout. She could pick up a phone and talk to people in authority. The report adds:
Cammack was only five weeks pregnant at the time, the embryo had no heartbeat and her own safety was in jeopardy, but nevertheless the congresswoman found herself forced to pull up the letter of the law on her phone to argue the case and even put in a call to Governor Ron DeSantis, without being able to reach him, before staff relented and came to her aid.
Medical care should not depend on who you know. Luckily for Cammack, she did know people. She survived and is now pregnant again and expecting in August. But had she not been connected, she may well have had the choice to stay alive ripped from her. And left in the hands of callous, bible-thumping, women-hating bastards for whom half the population are baby-making machines without the right of bodily autonomy.
If you thought that this intimate experience of the effects of anti-choice laws chastened Kat — or caused her to question the medical policies her team fought for — think again. Cammack blames the left for her brush with death. The report continues:
But surprisingly, given her ordeal, the representative does not feel the law itself is at fault and instead blames Democrats for scaring medical professionals into confusion over their responsibilities. "It was absolute fearmongering at its worst," Cammack told the Journal while acknowledging that reproductive rights activists might draw the opposite conclusion from her story. "There will be some comments like, 'Well, thank God we have abortion services,' even though what I went through wasn't an abortion," she said.
Her take on the matter is Orwellian. "Fearmongering at its worst"? The Cambridge Dictionary defines "fearmongering "as: "the action of intentionally trying to make people afraid of something when this is not necessary or reasonable." She is a living (thankfully) example of what happens in anti-choice world. How can she say the fear of delayed medical treatment was not reasonable when her treatment was delayed?
As for "wasn't an abortion," WTF does she think what she went through was? The doctors treated her as if the procedure was an abortion. And they thought it was potentially an abortion because the law left room for that interpretation.
We shouldn't be surprised at her blame-shifting. It isn't the first time this zealot has falsely slammed Democrats for the bad things in her life. She once claimed that her family was evicted from their cattle ranch "due to an Obama-era housing program." In reality, the ranch was put up for sale because the family could not afford the mortgage payments.
She also claims to be a fan of small government. In 2020, she told Republican Magazine,
"I am inspired by principled Conservative thinkers who do not allow for the status quo in Washington to force them to falter from their mission--to defend the American people from the infringement of the government."
Who the feck does she think infringed on her medical treatment? Hint: it wasn't those pinko, big-government socialists.
I’m a liberal. But if Democratic Party policies put my life at risk, I certainly wouldn’t vote for them. What kind of idiot would supports a party that endangers their existence?
