US Went Behind Allies Back To Strike Deal With Russia On A Ukraine Invasion Resolution [1]

The Trump administration went behind allies back to make a deal with Russia. Ukraine prepared a resolution to mark the 3rd anniversary of the war, which condemned Russian aggression and demanded the withdrawal of Russian troops. The Trump administration, on 2/21/25 had US Chargé d'Affaires at the UN Dorothy Shea, tell representatives of France and the United Kingdom that Ukraine should withdraw its draft resolution.
The United States planned to introduce it’s own resolution, which had already been discussed with Russia, and it was expected that Europe would accept. During an emergency meeting with European diplomats, it was decided that US actions were a betrayal and they would not withdraw Ukraine’s resolution, nor would changes be made.
France and the UK, permanent members of the UN Security Council, took on the fight with the US, with London rebuffing Washington and Paris taking over the UN General Assembly. France successfully amended the American draft with text adding the requirement to respect territorial integrity. The US then declined to support it’s own text.
The Ukraine resolution passed with a majority vote on 2/24. The US voted against the Ukraine resolution, which condemned Russian aggression, and voted with Russian and Belarus to reject. The US had been outplayed. The origins of this article came from Le Monde.
