Proof Trump has no plan to win the peace: he wants China's help to keep Strait of Hormuz open [1]

I’m a hawkish Democrat by inclination. I supported the first Gulf War, as well as the initial incursion into Afghanistan. But I opposed Trump’s strike on Iranian nuclear sites for the same reason I opposed the second Gulf War. Like Bush 43 before him, Trump has no credible plan to win the peace. We got a reminder of this when Trump—through Marco Rubio—asked China to help keep Iran from closing off the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for the bomb raid.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Sunday called for China to prevent Iran from closing the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important trade routes for crude oil in the world. “I encourage the Chinese government in Beijing to call them about that, because they heavily depend on the Straits of Hormuz for their oil,” Rubio said in an interview on Fox News. China is Iran’s most important oil customer and maintains friendly relations with the Islamic Republic.

This happened on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures” while Rubio was making the rounds of the Sunday talk shows.

Anyone who has been paying attention could have seen from a mile away that Iran would find a way to retaliate. For those who don’t know, the Strait of Hormuz is a major part of the world’s oil supply chain. Some 20 percent of the world’s oil flows through it. Closing off that strait could potentially cause oil prices to skyrocket—above $100 per barrel, per Goldman Sachs and Rapidan Energy.

Analysts at JPMorganChase didn’t think Iran would take this step. But the Iranian parliament voted earlier today to support closing the strait. Though the final word rests with Iran’s national security council—and ultimately, with supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei—that they’re even considering it speaks volumes.

A competent leader would have made plans to alleviate potential retaliation before giving the order to send in the planes. But then again, Trump is not a competent leader. Granted, the most visible concern for the moment is the prospect of 40,000 troops in the Middle East being put at risk. But closing the Strait could cause a lot of pain at home. The fact Trump was willing to do this is yet more proof “America First” is a fraud.
