Iran Votes to Close the Strait of Hormuz - and Russia Says Countries May Give Nukes to Iran [1]

I’m not real fond of the New York Post, but they do write expressive headlines. Here’s the one from about an hour ago:

Iran orders closure of Strait of Hormuz — putting one-fifth of world’s oil supply at risk

Iran’s parliament has voted to close the Strait of Hormuz, the vital shipping channel through which around 20% of the world’s daily oil flows. The move, which could block $1 billion in oil shipments per day, is likely to send oil prices soaring. It will come into effect pending a final decision by Iran’s Supreme Council.

I can’t see the parliament voting for this without the the ayatollah’s approval, so expect the council will agree (they have to decide by tonight).

The US doesn’t get much oil from that part of the world these days, but other countries do:

Asia is likely to bear the brunt most from any closures to the waterway, with China, India, Japan and South Korea all getting most of their oil imports through the strait. China, the world’s biggest buyer of Iranian oil and a critical partner that has previously used its veto power at the UN Security Council to block sanctions or resolutions against Tehran, would be particularly affected by any closure.

If China’s Xi wasn’t thrilled with Trump before this, you can bet he isn’t exactly happy now. As for Putin, he hasn’t said much, but a number of Russian voices are:

(Daily Mirror) Putin hardliners call for Russia to 'take up arms' for Iran after US strikes

Vladimir Putin has been told Russia must send military support for Tehran following the US attacks on Iran nuclear sites overnight, with Russians urged to be ready for world war

and the Mirror adds this frightening tidbit:

Close ally of the dictator Dmitry Medvedev, his security council deputy and an ex-Russian president, gave the first official Russian reaction from the Putin regime to the US strikes. “Critical infrastructure of the nuclear cycle appears to have suffered little or no damage,” said Medvedev, who heads the main political party backing Putin. “Enrichment of nuclear materials, and now we can say directly – and future production of nuclear weapons – will continue. A number of countries are ready to directly supply Iran with their nuclear weapons.” [emphasis added]

Thanks, Donald.
