To be safe, please check out this and other articles to see if you need to change your passwords (and sign out “other devices”) now as a precaution against thievery and trouble in your life.
Billions of login credentials have been leaked online, Cybernews researchers say According to a report published this week, Cybernews researchers have recently discovered 30 exposed datasets that each contain a vast amount of login information — amounting to a total of 16 billion compromised credentials. That includes user passwords for a range of popular platforms including Google, Facebook and Apple. Sixteen billion is roughly double the amount of people on Earth today, signaling that impacted consumers may have had credentials for more than one account leaked. Cybernews notes that there are most certainly duplicates in the data and so “it's impossible to tell how many people or accounts were actually exposed.” ABC News
(Please note that this is data found in datasets that appear on the internet. They do not constitute one singular new data breach.)
A tad bit more below the fold….
Tad is a lizard who lives out by those Queen of the Night and he’s doing fine.
Resources to help you change your passwords now.
Here’s a site where you can learn more about how to Change or reset your Google password.
Here’s a site where you can learn more about how to Change your Apple Account password.
Your Apple Account password may be different than the “log in” password for your device(s). That information is how to change your main account password.
Here’s a site where you can learn more about How do I change MacBook Pro password at Apple Support Communities.
If you get a chance to sign out of your other devices….
Dance that dance. While changing your password for Apple, you’re given an option to sign out of other devices.
The threat here is that your information has been sold to some nefarious #&@)#! so it’s a good idea to sign out any other devices. Yes, you’ll need to log back in to those other devices, but that’s an unfortunate part of the CyberSecurity dance.
UPDATE with link to sourced report
Here’s a link to the more substantive report at Cybernews clarifying that these companies weren’t leaked themselves, but data shows datasets from those company. (Which is why it may be good to change passwords.)
16 billion passwords exposed in record-breaking data breach, opening access to Facebook, Google, Apple, and any other service imaginable No, Facebook, Google, and Apple passwords weren’t leaked. Or were they? With a dataset containing 16 billion passwords, that’s equivalent to two leaked accounts for every person on the planet. We don’t really know how many duplicate records there are, as the leak comes from multiple datasets. However, some reporting by other media outlets can be quite misleading. Some claim that Facebook, Google, and Apple credentials were leaked. While we can’t completely dismiss such claims, we feel this is somewhat inaccurate. “There was no centralized data breach at any of these companies,” Diachenko said when I asked him to clarify whether any of the datasets actually came from Facebook, Google, or Apple. However, that doesn’t mean that none of the logins were breached and leaked to the dark web. “Credentials we’ve seen in infostealer logs contained login URLs to Apple, Facebook, and Google login pages,” Diachenko said. So, as mentioned above, this means that the leaked information opens the doors to pretty much any online service imaginable. Cybernews
Check sources for other accounts where you may be vulnerable
Please share any other information you may have on this data breach in comments.
If you're worried about your account data potentially being exposed in a recent breach, the first thing you can do is change your password — and avoid using the same or similar login credentials on multiple sites. If you find it too hard to memorize all your different passwords, consider a password manager or passkey. And also add multifactor authentication, which can serve as a second layer of verification through your phone, email or USB authenticator key. (From link above the virtual fold)
Also, if you get a chance to see Dan……
See Dan. He’s been asking about you. I really think he misses you.
****
And everybody please be safe.
