I love history. Is it too much to ask for a President who knows our own?
Estimates vary but, Wikipedia has the number of the people who died during the civil war as 698,000.
Abraham Lincoln won the Presidency in 1860 with 1,855,276 votes and 180 electoral college votes. Voter turnout was 81.2% (can you imagine what our politics would be like if we could get that number again?)
None of the other men Lincoln ran against advocated for the end of slavery, quite the contrary.
Stephen Douglas was in favor of the Dred Scott decision and debated Lincoln in a series of famous debates on the subject of slavery, advocating for popular sovereignty.
John C. Breckinridge was a southern Democrat who advocated for federal protection of slavery.
John Bell was a Tennessee politician who ran under the Constitutional Union party and was a slaveholder, ultimately backing secession after the battle of Fort Sumpter.
Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in order to undermine the confederacy and preserve the Union.
Donald Trump knows little of our history and vainly attempts to compare himself with past successful Presidents in order to feed his ego. Abraham Lincoln understood the country couldn’t survive with the evil of slavery. Trump is too racist to understand using race to divide the country will only tear it asunder.
That Lincoln only won office with 40% of the vote shows how close we came to not overcoming slavery. Had we not overcome it, I believe we would never have become the superpower we were until a few months ago. To overcome this racist President and the damage he’s doing to our history and our laws, we should push our media to better fact check and educate the public of the truth. If we are to ever recover from this man, we must reject the toxic poison of racism, not just against Black people but all ethnicities. We need leaders who will educate the American people and not distort or lie about history to package their rhetoric.
I’m writing this on Juneteenth, the day slavery ended in Texas 1865. The Democratic party needs to remember our past and why we must eradicate racism from our country and not be swayed by calls to move to the center and stop being “woke”. There is nothing wrong with advocating for everyone in our party. To do anything less will prove to voters Democrats are only willing to fight for people’s rights when it’s politically expedient. If anything, it’s time to double down on fighting for everyone.
