Our Social Security Experience [1]

In late March of this year I decided that it was time for me to start my social security benefits. My husband was retiring from his job at the VA and after consulting with a financial planner we decided that it was in our best interest to start them ASAP. I went on line and completed the ID.me verification process and then spent about 45 minutes on the Social Security website reviewing information and completing the application. The whole process took less than an hour. Then on April 3rd I received a payment from Social Security that was described as a “one time payment”. I guess since I applied within the time frame that I would have received a check for the previous month they paid it to me as soon as they could. Since then I have received two additional payments each one two days earlier than expected, but that is probably due to the fact that I chose direct deposit. So far, so good.
Then in the beginning of June I walked my husband thru the process. The one problem we had was that he already had an ID.me account and we had trouble trying to open a new one. But that was our problem not theirs. After doing the online application, which went smoothly, he received his first direct deposit on the 16th of this month. It didn’t take them long at all to process and start paying his benefits. Again, so far, so good.
All in all, we have not had any problems with Social Security Benefits so far. Our checks arrive on the date, or before, as listed on the Social Security web site. The processing time, was in my opinion, very fast. The information that they list on their website was accurate, up to the last year which had not been recorded yet. I am not sure if they are going to make an adjustment to our benefits when it is recorded or not but I will keep an eye out for that.
Thankfully, we have not had a need to call Social Security, and have not had any problems so far. I am sure that people with problems are frustrated due to the DOGE cuts and take over, but as far as I am concerned all went well.
I am writing this diary so that people who are thinking about applying for benefits can be assured that the system is still working. We didn’t have any problems but with all the horror stories about social security and problems that people are having, I was worried that if we did not apply now we might not be able to in the near future. While that may turn out to be the case, I still want people to know that the benefits that you have been promised are still available and the process is easy. So, rest assured that your Social Security, at least for now, is there for you if you need it.
