The Daily Bucket is a regular series from the Backyard Science group. Here we talk about Mother Nature in all her glory, especially the parts that live nearby. So let us know (as close as you are comfortable) where you are and what's going on around you. What's the weather like? Seen any interesting plants, bugs or critters? Are there birds at your feeders? Deer, foxes or snakies in your yard? Seen any cool rocks or geological features? Post your observations and notes here. And photos. We like photos. :)

Recently while taking a walk around Lake Seminole Park in Pinellas County FL, I came upon a Great Blue Heron who had just nabbed himself an enormous fish (as a comparison, that bird is almost tall enough to look me straight in the eyes). I’ve previously seen Herons put down some fish that I thought would be impossible, but this one I think was about the biggest fish I’d ever seen a bird try to tackle. It took him a lot of work and around a half an hour of time, but in the end he managed to get it down. I have to think it was enough to last him the rest of the day.

Some photos of the struggle.

Damn, this thing is big
