Word of the Week: Due Process. Voters are starting to focus on a fundamental Right [1]

We are now canvassing in 17 of Hope Springs from Field PAC [dated website, to be updated in the Fall] target states: Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky (KY-6), Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia & Wisconsin. We are fairly stretched for an all-volunteer outfit but we were still able to include KY-06 and New Jersey — the latter at the request of the Democratic gubernatorial campaign. We were only able to take on New Jersey with the help of that campaign, who has allowed some of their field organizers to help cut turf and lead some of the canvasses.
But that isn’t the focus of this diary. We learned two things this weekend in our Saturday canvass: we had a lot of our volunteers skip out on Saturday (who’s shocked?) and a new item or subject broke through on our Issues Survey. That is really the subject of this diary.
It’s really been bubbling up for at least 3 weeks before Saturday, when i first noticed. On May 24th, 34 voters around the country said that the need for Due Process was the most urgent issue facing America. On the last day of May, 76 voters said that. On the first Saturday of June, 128 voters mentioned Due Process as their most urgent concern and on this past Saturday, 159 voters raised it. Kinda ironic that it was also No Kings day.
Here’s the thing: we haven’t had this few volunteers canvassing since April 26th, when we only canvassed in 7 states. Weather was a factor in a few states (including extreme heat in Arizona), and we don’t really know why our numbers were so down last Saturday but we do know that, except in New Jersey, many of the areas we draw canvassers from had “No Kings” rallies and we did have volunteers tell us, in advance, that they planned on attending their local “No Kings” activities last weekend.
The extreme heat in Arizona didn’t seem to affect participation in the “No Kings” rallies, where some 40 events were planned.
But in every state that did go forward with canvassing on Saturday, volunteer numbers were down considerably. Again, we don’t know for sure why — some people did say they planned to do both — but i think we can all assume why. And i am sure i’ll get an earful from volunteers who normally sure up; it’s not like they are wallflowers!
Due Process was the word of the day, not only at the 2,000 rallies on Saturday but at voters doors, as well. It wasn’t the Top Issue anywhere, but voters are making their voices heard.
Hope Springs from Field PAC began knocking on doors again on March 1st. We target Democrats and unaffiliated voters with a systematic approach that reminds them not only that Democrats care, but Democrats are determined to deliver the best government possible to all Americans. The voters we talk to continue to tell us they come away more invested in governance and feel more favorably towards Democrats in general because of our approach.
Hope Springs has been called “the most comprehensive, organized grassroots voter contact project out there right now. It is truly astonishing that it is grassroots-based!” Not sure why it is “astonishing,” but i probably have more faith in grassroots or self-organized efforts because of my experience with Barack Obama’s early days in 2007.
If you are able to support Hope Springs from Field’s efforts to protect Democratic voters, especially in minority communities, expand the electorate, and believe in grassroots efforts to increase voter participation and election protection, we would appreciate your support:
