As frightening as it is to have a radical theocracy in charge of a potential nuclear arsenal in Iran, America needs to face the fact that we have a cult leader in charge of a nuclear arsenal in the U.S.. Donald Trump’s lack of understanding of global events was on display during his brief appearance at the recent G-7 summit. Of course, he could not miss the opportunity to strike a misinformed barb at the Canadian leadership. During his meeting with the other members of the G-7, held in Canada, Trump declared that “He [Putin] was thrown out by Trudeau, who convinced one or two people, along with Obama. He was thrown out. And he’s not a happy person about it, I can tell you that,” Trump said. This must have come as a surprise to Stephen Harper, who was the Prime Minister in 2014 before Trudeau. Trump’s off-the-cuff rewriting of history was that Justin Trudeau, who did not become Canada’s prime minister until November 2015 – more than 19 months after Russia’s 2014 ouster from the Group of 8, a consortium of countries with large, industrialized economies, was partially responsible for removing the Russian leader.
If you add that to his list of global faux pas, which is just a part of his incompetence, President Trump is in charge of the largest nuclear arsenal in the world. Now he contemplates entering the U.S. in a ballistic shooting war between Israel and Iran. Another example of his global ineptitude was an incident that has been whisked away down the memory hole: Trump sending an “armada” to the Sea of Japan in 2017 as a warning to North Korea. The problem was that the armada was going in the wrong direction because it was participating in naval war games with Australia. Hollow shows of force are what drag countries into forever wars. Trump has been reveling in his power to do this throughout his reign. After former president Barack Obama authorized the killing of Osama Bin Laden, he went on TV with a dignified assessment devoid of brags and hyperbole.
In October 2019, Trump announced that Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of ISIS, had been killed during a U.S. raid in Syria. He described al-Baghdadi's death, stating that he “died like a dog, he died like a coward.” I am sure this fed the Islamophobia and hatred of the other by his followers. Still, it lent nothing to the solemnity of the moment or the dignified leadership of America’s might. The juxtaposition was stark and embarrassing between Obama and Trump.

That brings us to the current conflict, where any wrong move could plunge the world into a third world war. Leading America in that tightrope walk is Donald Trump, who is sending vague threats to the Iranian leader, saying, “We know exactly where the so-called ‘Supreme Leader’ is hiding,” Trump said. “He is an easy target, but is safe there – We are not going to take him out (kill!), at least not for now. But we don’t want missiles shot at civilians or American soldiers. Our patience is wearing thin,” he finished. Couple that with a succession of juvenilities, like “Nobody knows what I’m going to do,” which is unsettling and a provocation. The real fear is that the man making the decision has no idea of the consequences. The mix of vengeance and ignorance that Trump poses to American democracy is now a threat to world peace.
