Trump wanted show of military subjugation but got liberation - so sad [1]

Trump was visibly disappointed with his birthday celebration last weekend. He had envisioned a display of an army that subjugates his enemies, like the stern looking, starched collar soldiers of North Korean, Chinese, and Russian dictators. What he got instead was a history lesson and show of an American army known not for subjugating people of other countries but for liberating citizens under oppressive regimes.
Pete Hegseth, Secretary of Defense, was apparently “reamed out” for orchestrating a parade down Constitution Avenue in DC, that was far too mellow for our presidents taste. He got soldiers in fatigues ambling down the street, waving to the crowd, instead of marching in strict time doing the Nazi German goose step.
What he got conjures up a vision of citizen soldiers liberating America from the clutches of despot King George, WW1 Doughboys, and WW2 GIs liberating France to that country’s profound and everlasting gratitude. This is not what Cadet Bonespurs had in mind. But, to paraphrase former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld “You go to a parade with the army you have, not the army you might want or wish to have at a later time..”
And in America, we have an army with a long, proud tradition of defending freedom, democracy, and equality before the law. Our army is, of course, sworn to protect and be loyal to the Constitution, not to be loyal to a president who disrespects and disobeys the principles of our Constitution. This distinguishes America from countries like Russia and North Korea, which our president openly admires and wants to emulate.
As a metaphor, one might note the strategically placed steel plates the US Army laid down to protect portions of Constitution Avenue from the tracks of the M1-Abrams Tanks they had been ordered to drive over it by our president.
If this parade is an indicator, all of our armed forces will continue to honor their oath to the Constitution and resist tyranny here at home as they have abroad for the last 250 years. This parade may offer us a sign of hope for the future of freedom as opposed to dictatorship in America.
