NYC Comptroller Brad Lander Arrested by ICE Goons - The People Immediately Rally [1]

As Lisa Needham reports on today’s front page, “Trump goons arrest another politician, laws be damned.”
When I heard the news in Brooklyn around 3PM, I hurried down to 26 Federal Plaza where the media were encamped, waiting for the release of Brad Lander, NYC Comptroller and candidate for mayor. At 4:30 he emerged from the federal building accompanied by his wife and NY State Governor Kathy Hochul. The governor, whom Trump has threatened to arrest for God knows what, slammed the illegal detention of Lander. He then spoke to the press, briefly describing the circumstances of his arrest while shielding a migrant named Edgardo. Lander demanded a judicial warrant, which the goons ignored, and then, when they manhandled him, he pointed out that they lacked authority to arrest US citizens.
For the past three weeks, Lander has been coming to the federal building to accompany migrants who are continually threatened by abduction without even a. semblance of due process. The way the presumed ICE agents have been running their racket has been to show up at immigration court, wearing their usual ragtag outfits without ID, and grabbing people who have been set up for them by immigration court “judges.” These characters specialize in ending the legal status of immigrants who appear for legally required hearings, making them instantly “illegal” and subject to being picked up by waiting “agents.” (Since they are masked and will not show ID, they might be ICE, HLS or even Proud Boys)
After speaking to the media, Brad headed for nearby Foley Square where a thousand or more people had assembled on very short notice to demand the release of the mayoral candidate.. After a stirring speech by an uncowed Lander, he ended his remarks with the immortal words from Emma Lazarus at the Statue of Liberty:
“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
