So my little (by California standards) town of Novato, California, pop 51,700, had four No Kings Rallies yesterday. I went to the downtown rally because it was on my way to work.

I knew on Friday that something big was afoot when the local Staples ran out of poster board. I had run into four other women there hunting for sign supplies. The geezers such as myself gave the newbies tips on sign technique, such as wrapping your paint stick with duct tape so you don’t get blisters.

The rally was completely insane. There were drums, tambourines, bullhorns, blaring cars, chanting, dancing. The energy was off the charts. Oldsters, youngsters, families, teenagers. People lined both sides of the wide street and the median for a quarter mile. Every time the traffic light changed the passing cars added to the din blaring their horns . Not just cars. Pickup trucks, delivery drivers, motorcycles. A bicyclist with a sign. People holding signs out the car windows as they drove past. It was incredible. The most focus, anger, joy, energy, determination I have seen since the late ‘60s .

The rally ended around 12:30. I drove past the intersection about three hours later, and there were still two protesters on the corner. A gentleman in a wheelchair and his wife, with signs written on cardboard.

No Kings.

This is California. There were cars.

And bikes….
