Music open thread: Lute concertos [1]

Last week, Trump’s travel ban had me thinking about talented Yemeni oud players like Ahmed Alshaiba. Our culture is all the poorer for all the musicians, even those from countries not listed in the travel ban, who decide that coming to America is not worth the hassle or the risk.

The oud is a direct ancestor of the lute, an instrument much favored in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Nowadays, most lute repertoire is played on the archlute, an instrument with two necks and more strings.

Could it really be the case that there are more oud concertos than there are lute concertos? I can find plenty of music with lute. But the only lute concerto I could find is the one by Vivaldi, in D major, RV 93. It’s a good one.
