YOU CAN REPOST IT AS COMMENT in the DIARY
WHEN YOU FIND SOMETHING in the DIARY that you LIKE
THE PERSON who MAKES the FIRST COMMENT WILL GET TWO CRITTERS
(Or NOT As the CASE MAY BE)
A gentle administrative note that we could use more volunteers, especially for critter wrangling, but diarists, too. There are resources available if one asks in the mornings. My calendar is here, but consider all dates tentative.
Notably, we could use one or two herders for Mondays and Tuesdays for the duration. This is not a long-term commitment. Add in a comment if you’d like to step up or NO KITTENS FOR YOU!
Let’s get started!

I already knew that Saturdays were tough because nothing gets reported over the weekends. I have an easy out because the regional stories have a longer shelf life, so I can pull things from a few days ago and they will still be fresh.
So far, today is not being my friend for content. I’m finding a lot on Bluesky, but I’m not finding a lot of other content. I try not to lean on Bluesky too much because it is a “quick” forum. There isn’t a lot of thought-provoking material, even if a lot of it is amusing. It’s the nature of the medium, not a reflection on the writers. Dog knows I love George Takei and Mrs. Betty Bowers, but I want to present deeper things as well as confections. I’m working through it. I have to remind myself that it’s still relatively early on a Monday morning.
It doesn’t help that I am trying to keep the Hortman assassination at bay, but that’s pretty much all that’s being reported on, with a dash of schadenfreude for the parade and a dash of crowing about the truly inspirational turnout for No Kings.

CC has a diary up
Pope Leo's Address During the Perade
I’ll let it speak for itself. It does get an endorsement, though. Good stuff, CC!

Paul Krugman...
Trump’s parade flopped. No Kings Day was a hit.
America is no longer a full-fledged democracy. We are currently living under a version of competitive authoritarianism — a system that (like Orban’s Hungary or Erdogan’s Turkey) is still democratic on paper but in which a ruling party no longer takes democracy’s rules seriously. As a result those in power violate those rules so often and to such an extent … that the regime fails to meet conventional minimum standards for democracy. Trumpists, however, haven’t yet fully consolidated their hold. America still has a chance of reclaiming itself from the grip of brazen corruption, mindless destruction, and contempt both for the rule of law and for our erstwhile allies. We don’t have to become a country bullied into submission.✂️

x CNBC: “You’ve been accused of being partisan.” CBO DIRECTOR: “I am a Republican.” Republicans dismiss the CBO saying #TrumpsTrillionsTransfer cuts health care and food the poor… and taxes for the rich — but it is led by one of their own. 🤔

'Innocent bystander' shot dead by 'peacekeepers' during 'No Kings' protest in Salt Lake City (MSN)
An "innocent bystander" at the "No Kings" demonstration in downtown Salt Lake City was shot and killed Saturday, police said. Arthur Folasa Ah Loo, 39, of Utah, died in a hospital after being transported for his injuries following the shooting, according to an update from the Salt Lake City Police Department. Detectives believe Ah Loo was at the demonstration as a bystander and "was not the intended target of the gunfire." Police have arrested Arturo Gamboa, 24. He was booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on a murder charge. It was not immediately clear whether Gamboa was still in jail Sunday and whether he has an attorney. Also detained Saturday were two men who were part of the event "peacekeeping team." One of the "peacekeepers" ultimately fired the shot that fatally injured Ah Loo, police said. It was not immediately clear whether those two men will face charges.✂️
I try to steer clear of crime stories, but this sort of reinforces my belief that more guns make us less safe, not more.

x 🧵I think it’s important to understand what disinformation like Sen. Mike Lee’s tweets are trying to do, psychologically/cognitively. In my disinfo class/Substack, I talk about how disinfo often uses “moral disengagement strategies” to manipulate people into accepting harmful conduct 1/

I encourage you to click through and read the thread. I promised Paco that I’d try to keep the Hortman assassination out of tonight’s Shade. I’m still trying. Asha Rangappa’s thread is worth reading because it’s not strictly about the assassination, it’s about what Mike Lee is trying to do when he is exploiting the situation.
I didn’t really start to hate him until that post.

George Conway Burns 'Loon' Trump With A Scathing New Nickname After Parade Flop (MSN)
President Donald Trump’s weekend parade wasn’t quite the extravaganza many had expected ― and critics such as conservative attorney George Conway couldn’t help but laugh at him over it. As millions gathered at anti-Trump protests around the nation, the president’s $45 million parade ― held on the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army as well as his own birthday ― was marked by low turnout and even lower energy. Trump himself at times appeared bored as the day dragged on. Conway said Trump was hoping for the kind of spectacle seen in North Korea under dictator Kim Jong Un, then offered the president a tweak on that name: Kim Jong Loon.✂️
The mockery is in the rest of the article and tweets therein.

x Eric Trump on Trump Mobile: "It's about time we start making phones in the United States of America, and so that's a big push for us."

Good luck sourcing components. I don’t suppose he counts intelligence or honesty in his portfolio, though. Welcome to the global supply chain. In a just world he’d be forced to make cell phones in the USA before he could go on to anything else, but we all know it’s just grift.

x This is worth 3 minutes of your time. No one wants to eat at a restaurant that only serves bland chicken. (It’s not about chicken, or restaurants, tho)

As the good doctor says, well worth three minutes.

Hillary Trolls Trump With Brutal Comparison Between Turnout For His Birthday Parade Vs. 'No Kings' Protests (Comicsands)
"Compare and contrast scenes from yesterday in America. On the one hand, Trump's low-energy Dear Leader parade (that cost you $45 million). On the other, millions of people across the country gathering peacefully to say: Here, we have no kings."
The entire article is worth a quick read.

Putting this one out there, even though it’s old, because it makes me smile.
‘No food, job or phones’: Afrikaner ‘refugee’ family ‘stranded’ in US (The South African)
An Afrikaner “refugee” family has reportedly been left stranded in the US, and is appealing for help on Facebook. The startling revelation was made by a South African expat on TikTok. Two groups of white South Africans have taken up “refugee status” in the US in recent weeks, as part of a programme open to “persecuted” people. AFRIKANER ‘REFUGEES’ LEFT STRANDED? On her TikTok account, South African expat @catmpt revealed that she had come across an Afrikaner “refugee” family in dire need of help. The family of four was reportedly stranded at a hotel in Montana without food, money, or a cellphone. Instead, they had reached out to a Facebook group for help. The woman said of the “refugees”: “They were understanding that they would be arriving here for complete assistance. People thought they would be arriving at a house, a job, medical insurance, and other things. It isn’t that way at all. She added: “Because of the political situation, they are really struggling to get jobs”. The woman revealed that she had left South Africa more than a decade ago, but had gone through a lengthy process. She also criticised Afrikaner “refugees” for having unrealistic expectations. She continued, “One side of me is like, ‘F**k that. ‘My husband and I went through all of the red tape, and we got our visas…we’ve got our green card. We’ve been here ten years. We did everything the right way. “Here, these people, regardless of what they were promised, just came here expecting everything”. Under the post, the woman added that she was assisting the family with a car as she was a “humanitarian”.✂️
Welcome to being an immigrant in the USA. I am in awe of what the Hmong accomplished in the Twin Cities.

Today is…
National Fudge Day
Ever hear anyone exclaim, “Oh, fudge!” when they’ve screwed something up? Like the Slinky, the Post-It note, potato chips, and penicillin, the dense candy-like treat known as fudge is believed to have been a mistake. According to legend, a confectioner flubbed while trying to make caramel, but ended up creating something just as tasty. We celebrate this happy accident on June 16, which is National Fudge Day

Take Your Cat to Work Day
For all you cat lovers out there, it’s time to celebrate your feline friend. Whoever is responsible for Take Your Cat to Work Day, please come forward to collect your prize — June 16 is now the cutest work day of the year (although dog people may disagree). It’s only right that we show our cats the world on the other side of the window — at least for one day a year.

Arborist Appreciation Day
Arborist Appreciation Day is celebrated on June 16 every year. It’s the time of the year when we show appreciation to these unsung heroes of tree cultivation, maintenance, and management — and the important role they play in the logging economy. Being an arborist is a dangerous job, as there are a lot of risks involved. It’s safe to say that these men and women put their lives on the line daily in horticulture and dendrology. Today, we show our appreciation for what they do. Find out the ways you can celebrate and show support to arborists nationwide.

Fresh Veggies Day
Fresh Veggies Day on June 16 is celebrated to commemorate the nutritional value of fresh vegetables and their importance to human health. Fresh vegetables are the best sources of micronutrients that are vital for metabolism, growth, development, and disease prevention. The natural fiber content in vegetables helps prevent constipation, hemorrhoids, and colon cancer. According to “Food & Wine” magazine, there is no such thing as a bad vegetable. Some may need extra work to remove an outer shell or be peeled, and some fare better when cooked. However, there is no reason not to eat fresh vegetables every day.

World Sea Turtle Day
World Sea Turtle Day is celebrated every year on June 16 to raise awareness about the plight of sea turtles. Did you know that every year, about eight tonnes of plastic are dumped in our oceans? That is extremely hazardous to sea turtles, so much so that six out of eight marine turtle species are on the verge of extinction. There are many other threats to sea turtles, such as encroachment of coastal development on nesting beaches, marine pollutants, accidental drowning on fishing gear, and the international turtle meat trade. Join hands with us to raise awareness about this important issue and save lives.
