5-12 Million Is Impressive, Sort of--But What About 10s of Millions of Couch Sitters? [1]

I have participated in 4 protest demonstrations so far. I have written a recently released book on the 2024 election and how to fight fascism and oligarchy in America. My wife, Marcy, and I have produced protest posters (see Marcy’s hand painted watercolor poster above), sent protest postcards, and I have written many DK essays imploring a massive response to Trump’s psychopathic presidency. Yes, 5-12 million protesters (estimates vary depending on the source) that turned out for the “No Kings Day” demonstrations were impressive in terms of sheer numbers. However, that amounts to 4.5% of the voting age population at the high end of crowd estimates. So where are the millions of Americans sitting on the sidelines while the rest of us put ourselves out there to defend democracy from those who aim to destroy it to establish an iron grip on power and profit. I understand that some are fearful of violence if they protest openly. I understand that some believe mass demonstrations will do no good to stop the thuggery of ICE and MAGA. I understand the myriad reasons millions do not turn out to protest, but the alternative is to lose our country to the immoral, iniquitous likes of Despot Don. The next massive protest should be at least twice as large. Roll off your couches, don’t let your fears or apathy permit the desecration of our democracy. 89 million registered voters didn’t even cast a ballot in 2024. That means that the apathetic and disconnected “won” the election. This is the time to STAND TALL and be counted. Join the movement actively. The alternative is to slide into an eventual emulation of Russia, North Korea, and other totalitarian states. Do I exaggerate? Do you really want to test my conclusion? RISE UP! Be impressive! You don’t require a cape. You just need to show up.
