No Kings in Berkeley - A Photo Diary [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

Berkeley had its own protest today. It was rather small by Berkeley standards, the size limited by both the venue and the fact that both Oakland and San Francisco had huge marches and rallies of their own. I almost went to Oakland, but we decided to stay at home, and it was great!

Berkeley has an Interstate freeway on its west edge, between the town city and SF Bay. Being a people kinda place, Berkeley built a bridge over the freeway so pedestrians and cyclists can get to the Bay shore. Then they (we) built a second one. The original bridge was the official site of the No Kings protest today, but that filled quickly, and the new bridge was the overflow site.

We arrived before the official start time of 1pm to find a small crowd already on the bridge.

Some people got there early! Mr pixxer counted at least 180 people here at the overflow site later in the protest. The road we’re on is the Frontage Road, not the freeway, which is (obviously) to the left.

Here are some of the sights from the hour-long event.

You couldn’t quite see this from the moon, but it must have been perfect from the freeway. Also, that embroidered red dress was gorgeous!

This woman’s sparkly garland caught the sunlight beautifully!

Looking at this photo, I am amazed by the temporary dearth of cars. By 2pm, the southbound lanes were backed up almost to this bridge. Mostly, I really liked the signs.

Prettier than probably any flag, to tell the truth.

There’s a really good metaphor here somewhere…

Of course, the fun part was waving to the drivers and seeing them wave, flash their lights, honk, honk madly, in return. Truck driver honks were especially appreciated. I think this truck was one that gratified us with a good horn blow. Semis, one tanker, miscellaneous middlin’ trucks, and — credit where it’s due — a huge Amazon Prime truck, honked in solidarity. Mr pixxer thinks maybe half the drivers actually acknowledged us. You could see people’s hands move to their horns or wave through the windshield. Some waved out the window.

The camera’s view of southbound I-80 through the rather small-bore chain-link fence. Pretty sure that truck was one of the ones that gave us a good honk. The thing on the left is the Frontage Road.

So, does this change any minds? Likely not. But it gave quite a few drivers the chance to say “Yeah, me too, No Kings!”

If you’d like 30 seconds of “being there,” you can play this video to hear the honks and see some waves. You might be able to hear the bridge people cheer for the horn from a truck :)

After the event, we drove south past the main Berkeley site — the original pedestrian overpass — where a pretty good crowd was still on the bridge. Many will recognize this as a favorite site for signs by freewayblogger.

Original pedestrian overpass over I-80, near University Avenue, Berkeley, official site of the No Kings protest 14 June 2025. This is after the official end of the event.

If you have photos of your event and don’t feel like posting them in a diary, please feel free to add in the comments. How was your day? :)
